Aereo headed to Boston on May 15th, open access begins May 30th

Good news, Bostonians: yours is the second major US city to get Aereo live television access via the web, and it's starting on May 15th. Aereo announced its next city expansion this morning, and said the service will go live to pre-registered parties on May 15th. It will eventually become widely available to Boston's "designated market area," which includes "more than 4.5 million consumers in 15 counties in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont." We've got the full list of counties after the break if you're interested.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Aereo, which has plans for expansion in 22 cities just this year. The OTA network internet streaming TV service launched in New York City early last year. Traditional broadcast networks have voiced concern over Aereo's TV model, even threatening to move to cable should the nascent internet company gets its way in an ongoing legal battle.

PFT: Pats ink Steelers WR Sanders to offer sheet

San Francisco 49ers v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

The Vancouver Sun quoted Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman this week as saying that half the NFL takes Adderall. But Sherman says he was misquoted.

Sherman, who successfully appealed a four-game suspension for a positive Adderall test during the regular season, also said on NFL AM on Thursday morning that he has never taken the drug, which is commonly prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

?I didn?t say that,? Sherman said. ?It?s just another case of these writers trying to gain a little notoriety in an interview. What I said was, There?s a bunch of guys in the league on prescription for Adderall, so what ? you know, I?ve never seen people get prescribed a performance-enhancing drug, you know what I mean? So I don?t understand, you know, what everybody is so ? you know, they go so crazy about it when some of these guys test positive for it, but a bunch of guys have prescriptions for it, so it?s, like, you know, kind of misleading.?

So where did the ?half the league takes it? quote come from? Sherman said he didn?t say that.

?I didn?t say half, I said a bunch of guys, and then he went with whatever he went with, but that?s the way I put it,? Sherman said.

Sherman said he hasn?t used Adderall and isn?t sure why anyone would use it as a performance enhancer.

?I?m not sure. I?ve never taken it,? Sherman said. ?So I?m not sure. From what I?ve learned from this whole case and everything, it somehow, like, slows, slows it down, for people that are sped up, like, ADHD, apparently the guys are too sped up, and, you know, there are breaks in their attention, that the Adderall kind of bridges the breaks in their attention and allows them to stay focused on one thing at a time.?

Sherman added that he doesn?t care if his public comments hurt his reputation.

?I really don?t care either way to tell you the truth,? Sherman said. ?If it does, so be it, if it doesn?t, so be it.?

Trial of bin Laden's son-in-law set for January in New York City

BRUSSELS, April 8 (Reuters) - A French teenager who had hidden inside a garbage container was crushed to death inside a trash truck in Luxembourg on Saturday, police said. Garbage men only discovered the 17-year-old when he shouted out as they emptied the container into the back of the truck early on Saturday morning, but by then he was already in the grasp of the crushing mechanism. "He cried out, but it was already too late," a spokeswoman for Luxembourg police said on Monday. The young man, whose name was not released, died on the scene, in the city of Luxembourg. ...

Cuba to hand over U.S. couple accused of snatching their sons

By Jeff Franks

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba on Tuesday said an American accused of kidnapping his two young sons in Florida and fleeing with them by boat to the communist-led island would be turned over to U.S. authorities.

The foreign ministry announced the decision in a terse statement saying Joshua Michael Hakken, a fugitive from U.S. justice, would be handed over with wife Sharyn and their children.

Hakken had surfaced in Cuba on Tuesday and was holed up with his family at the Hemingway Marina near Havana.

Reuters and other media outlets had attempted to speak with Hakken when he appeared briefly before reporters to stow away gear and secure the hatch on a small blue and white sailboat named Salty at the marina.

But Hakken, a stocky man who was bearded and wearing shorts and a dark green baseball cap, shook his head 'no' when asked if would answer any questions.

He then disappeared into a nearby building which was roped off and plainclothes security guards equipped with walkie-talkies at the marina prevented journalists from asking any further questions.

The foreign ministry said Hakken had arrived at the marina on Sunday afternoon.

A State Department official said earlier that the United States was receiving "very good cooperation from the Cuban authorities" in the Hakken case and was providing "all appropriate assistance to the family."

Washington and Havana have no extradition agreement and tensions flared between the two Cold War enemies during the Elian Gonzalez child custody battle more than a decade ago. But there were few if any parallels between the Hakken case and Gonzalez saga, which involved a boy plucked from an inner tube off Florida after his mother and others drowned while fleeing Cuba. He was ultimately returned to his father in Cuba.

Hakken, who is wanted on two counts of kidnapping and other charges including interference with child custody, is accused of breaking into his mother-in-law's home north of Tampa, Florida, last Wednesday and tying her up with zip ties. He then fled with his sons, 4-year-old Cole and 2-year-old Chase, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Hours later, Hakken, his wife, and the children left from a dock in Madeira Beach, Florida, aboard the Salty, their recently purchased 25-foot (7.6-meter) sailboat, investigators said.

Hakken knew long before he went to his mother-in-law's home that he and his wife had lost custody of the children, authorities said.

The boys wound up with their maternal grandmother after the Hakkens attended an "anti-government" rally in June in Louisiana, where police said they found Hakken in the family's hotel room with a gun, marijuana and knife, talking about a "journey to Armageddon," according to the Tampa Times newspaper.

Hakken was charged with marijuana possession and the boys were placed in a foster home, where Hakken later showed up armed with a gun, the Times quoted authorities as saying.

Louisiana officials then sent the boys to live in Tampa with their maternal grandmother Patricia Hauser.

Warrants issued in Hillsborough County, in addition to kidnapping and interfering with child custody, charges of child neglect, false imprisonment, burglary with battery and stealing Hauser's car.

HBT: Rangers' Harrison to DL with back injury

Texas placed Matt Harrison on the disabled list after the left-hander gave up 11 runs his first two starts while pitching through lower back soreness.

To replace Harrison on the roster and in the rotation the Rangers called up Triple-A right-hander Justin Grimm, who?ll start tomorrow night against the Mariners. Grimm got knocked around in his 14-inning debut last season and also struggled some at Triple-A, but throws in the mid-90s and has a solid overall track record in the minors.

After back-to-back seasons with 30-plus starts and an ERA under 3.50 Harrison inked a five-year, $55 million extension in January and got the Opening Day assignment for the Rangers.

United Airlines plans earlier flights with Boeing 787

(Reuters) - United Airlines said on Tuesday that it planned to begin flying Boeing's 787 Dreamliner five days sooner than previously expected, a sign of confidence in the jet's return to service after regulators grounded it in January over safety concerns.

United, a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc , said it planned to use Boeing's newest jet on its Denver-Houston route starting May 31 and on the Denver-Tokyo's Narita route beginning on June 10.

The airline will make additional schedule changes as the timeline for certification and modification work becomes clearer, spokeswoman Christen David said.

David could not provide further details or say why the airline moved up its scheduled use of the jet. She also did not say would happen if the jet is not ready for use by May 31.

In February, United dropped the Dreamliner from its schedule through June 5, except for a Denver-Tokyo route tentatively scheduled for May. Many of the eight other airlines that own the jet also dropped it from their schedules.

Regulators banned the Dreamliner from flight on January 16 after lithium-ion batteries overheated on two jets that month. The jet has not flown commercial service since.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration gave Boeing permission for a single "ferry" flight on February 7 and on March 12 allowed the company to conduct a body of tests designed to show its redesigned battery system was safe.

On Friday, Boeing made a test flight with the modified system, completing initial testing of it.

The FAA said on Monday that it expected formal data from Boeing's tests to arrive shortly. Boeing declined to say whether it had submitted the data.

"While testing is completed, we are engaged with the FAA to reply to additional requests and continue dialog to ensure we have met all of their expectations," Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said.

It was not clear if other airlines are scheduling 787 service.

LOT Polish Airways said it would not fly the jet until October. The airline could not be reached for comment.

A spokesman for Qatar Airways said the airline was waiting for the FAA to clear the 787 for flight before disclosing plans.

Japan's All Nippon Airways , the largest 787 owner, said late last month that it also was taking reservations for flights on the jet for June, but might decide to use different planes. A spokeswoman for Japan Airlines referred questions to Tokyo.

Shares of United Continental were up 0.1 percent at $30.10 in midday trading, while Boeing fell 0.4 percent to $86.40.

{Musing Mathematically}: Rubricized: Thoughts Provoked by Skemp

This week I had the privilege of chatting with other math educators about an article written by Richard R. Skemp in 1976. We have formed a sort of ad hoc reading group built around reading classic and contemporary pieces of mathematics education research and discussing their application to our daily crafts. The?inaugural?meeting (so to speak) consisted of Raymond Johnson (@MathEdnet), Chris Robinson (@absvalteaching), Nik Doran (@nik_d_maths), Joshua Fisher (suspiciously?un-twitterable), and myself(@NatBanting).

The full conversation--facilitated through Google Hangouts--can be viewed on Raymond Johnson's blog here.

It must first be said that I loved the article; it would be a great starting point for any math educator to begin to wrestle with the distinctions obnoxiously present in the field of math education. It also holds timeless value for those more experienced in the digestion of such literature. Full reference can be found at the end of this post.

Moving forward...

In a nutshell, Skemp proposes that there are two types of understanding when it comes to the field of mathematics. The first--relational understanding--describes the process of knowing what to do and why you are doing it. The second--instrumental understanding--describes the process of applying rules to arrive at answers. It must be said right that these two understandings are not mutually exclusive. In fact, most of our conversation revolved around their classification, necessity, and interrelation.

The group--following Skemp's lead--addresses the issue of assessment in light of relational understanding. How can we begin to assess deep understanding of mathematics, especially understanding that is not our own. The methods of portfolios and interviews were suggested, but dismissed as regular assessment pieces due to the extensive time burden.?

Here is my thought on the difficulty of assessing relational understanding:

Relational understanding is difficult to assess because teachers use an instrumental approach in all assessment.

Allow me to briefly explain...

A lot of ?teachers match instrumental--or algorithmic--assessments to their instrumental teaching. That seems like the correct thing to do. Recent work in mathematics education suggest that including lessons that build relational understanding has certain benefits for student learning. The only problem is that teachers need to be able to spot and reward that learning.?

Let's say you are working through a task where a student has generalized a problem, worked effectively with others, deduced possible pathways toward a solution, checked the reasonableness of their solution, and even posed further problems or?abstracted?universal truths. In order to judge their mathematical progress, you naturally start looking for key indicators of success.?

Things like:

  • Did they use a diagram?
  • Did they consider all possible cases?
  • Did they link the problem to a previous one?
  • Did they check their answer?
  • Did they persevere throughout the process?

Teachers are using an algorithm to assess work that is designed to empower students to see the larger picture. I believe that, over the years, teachers develop their own set of rules that govern assessment and then apply them instrumentally to assess students. (Now this is a very young belief, and I am open for counter-beliefs).?

I also think that within this relational-instrumental struggle exists the birth of the?infallible (**cough**) assessment tool known as the almighty rubric. All rubrics do is attempt to instrumentally describe relational skills, yet they are upheld as the ideal way to achieve relational assessment. As teachers, our entire assessment framework has been rubricized; everything must fit into a nice box in a nice grid.

This is the portion where I should suggest a solution, but I am far from it. I have only just begin to realize that even my observations during otherwise "relational" tasks are of an instrumental nature. Algorithms are a part of mathematics, and assessing them is--by its very nature--algorithmic. I am now wondering what a non-algorithmic assessment looks like.

Surf's up: Turbulence tells sea urchins to settle down

Apr. 9, 2013 ? Tumbling in the waves as they hit a rocky shore tells purple sea urchin larvae it's time to settle down and look for a spot to grow into an adult, researchers at the University of California, Davis, Bodega Marine Laboratory have found. The work is published April 8 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"How these animals find their way to the right habitat is a fascinating problem," said Brian Gaylord, professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis and a researcher at the Bodega Marine Lab. "The turbulence response allows them to tell that they're in the right neighborhood."

Like most shoreline animals, purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) have a two-stage life cycle. The young are microscopic, look completely different from adults and drift in the upper levels of the ocean for about a month before settling on a rocky shore and transforming into the familiar spiny adult.

"Once they decide to settle, they attach to a rock and undergo body remodeling into a juvenile sea urchin with spines," Gaylord said.

Over short distances, the larvae can respond to chemical traces in the water, especially substances that might be given off from a rock thick with algae or other food for the growing urchins.

But how do the larvae know they are close enough to the right shoreline habitat to start searching for such signals?

On the California coast, rocky headlands -- the urchins' preferred environment -- are interspersed with long stretches of beach that experience lower levels of turbulence. The larvae don't have the resources to swim for miles along a beach looking for a nice slimy rock, but when carried by currents near a wave-swept rocky reef, the high turbulence tells them to begin a finer-scale search, the researchers found.

Gaylord and co-authors Jason Hodin of Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station and Matthew Ferner of San Francisco State University used a device called a Taylor-Couette cell to see how urchin larvae responded to being churned by shear forces comparable to those in waves breaking on a rocky shore.

The Taylor-Couette cell consists of one rotating cylinder inside another, with a layer of fluid in between. When the cylinders spin relative to each other, they set up shear forces in the fluid. Scientists more typically use the device for studying fluid dynamics, especially the transition where flows becomes chaotic and turbulence appears.

Gaylord and his colleagues took the urchin larvae for a spin through a Taylor-Couette cell then exposed them to potassium, known to act as a chemical signal that triggers larvae to begin settling.

Larvae that had been exposed to turbulence responded to the chemical signal earlier in development than those that had not -- in fact, they responded at a stage at which it had previously been believed larvae could not settle.

Especially telling was that neither turbulence nor the chemical signal alone promoted settling at this earlier developmental stage.

The experiment shows that the shift from living free in the ocean to living on a rock is a two-step process, Gaylord said. In the first step, exposure to turbulence initiates an abrupt transition to a state in which the larvae are "competent to settle." A chemical signal triggers the second step, actual settlement, and the larvae then complete their transformation into juvenile sea urchins.

It's not yet clear how the larvae detect turbulence, Gaylord said. That might happen through receptors that respond to stretching or flexing. The two-step settlement process might occur in other species that settle on shorelines, he said.

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

(AP) ? Tired of grumbling about economic austerity? Maybe it's time to sing about it.

So say two Americans living in Estonia.

Inspired by a lively social media exchange between Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, the two expats have composed an operetta that offers point and counterpoint on the value of austerity ? an ever more prominent reality in Europe's struggling economy.

"Music and economics are not mutually exclusive," said Eugene Birman, who composed the music for the oeuvre premiering Sunday as part of the annual Estonian Music Days festival. Scott Diel wrote the lyrics.

In the 16-minute performance, an Estonian soprano presents both sides of the online spat, accompanied by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

Last year Krugman, writing in his blog in The New York Times, questioned the benefits of Estonia becoming "a poster child for austerity defenders" after the nation saw economic output collapse by nearly 20 percent during the 2008-2009 financial crisis. Unemployment soared and many Estonians fled the country for work elsewhere in Europe.

Ilves, a former U.S. citizen who gave up his passport to serve in Estonia's government, reacted with a Twitter salvo that slammed Krugman for being "smug, overbearing and patronizing."

The English language operetta's title "Nostra Culpa" ? "Our Fault" in Latin ? is taken from one of Ilves' sarcastic tweets: "But yes, what do we know? We're just dumb and silly East Europeans. Unenlightened. Someday we too will understand. Nostra culpa."

In another tweet, Ilves suggested that the dispute boiled down to "a Princeton vs. Columbia thing" ? a reference to Krugman's professorship at Princeton University and Ilves' degree from Columbia University.

At a rehearsal this week, the orchestra led by conductor Risto Joost gave a powerful rendition of Birman's atonal score, as soprano Iris Oja tried to capture the sarcasm and indignation of Ilves' tweets.

"Silly. Eastern. Europeans? Unenlightened?" she sang, pausing after each word before bawling a high-pitched "Nostra Culpaaaa!"

Birman says he was fascinated by the "almost animalistic reaction" that he saw in Ilves' attempt to defend the honor of Estonia, a nation of 1.3 million, whose government raised taxes and cut salaries for public sector workers in response to the country's deep recession.

"A knightly crusade against the oppressor, if you will. Don't you think that's classic opera material?" said Birman, who was born in neighboring Latvia but grew up in the U.S.

Diel, who has followed Estonia's economic development in the past 20 years since it gained independence from the Soviet Union, picked up on the debate and proposed putting it to music to Birman.

Diel said the libretto is divided into two movements. The first quotes from Krugman's blog to reflect his Keynesian philosophy of spending your way out of crisis. The second part is based on Ilves' tweets.

Nowhere in the operetta are Ilves or Krugman mentioned, as the composers wanted to give the work a wider focus. "I thought this exchange between these two gentlemen was on some level a proxy for the larger argument," Diel said. "But let the listeners decide."

Birman, who also studied economics at Columbia, said it's not a piece about personalities or egos. "There is no winner or loser," he said.

With Cyprus joining the increasingly long list of European countries forced to swallow the bitter prescription of austerity ? steep budget cuts that trigger joblessness and social angst ? the theme hasn't lost its timeliness.

Birman's composition isn't easy to categorize. Oja said the work is best described as contemporary: "I find it very alive, almost like improvisation."

Neither Krugman nor Ilves responded to requests for comment. Birman and Diel said they had invited both to Sunday's performance but received no replies.

"Makes no difference to me whether they attend or not," Birman said. "It's not about particular persons."

Jaws dropped at 4:30 p.m. inside MetLife Stadium as the doors of WrestleMania 29 opened and droves of WWE fans were greeted by a 67-foot Lady Liberty and an elaborate set influenced by N.Y. and N.J. icons.

Hours before a spectacular fireworks display from atop a recreated Brooklyn Bridge kicked off The Show of Shows, set designer Jason Robinson gave WWE.com both facts and stats on perhaps the most remarkably crafted grand stage in WrestleMania history.

Watch Mr. McMahon's #BigReveal

A miniature Statue of Liberty (0.42 the scale, to be precise) was the centerpiece soaring above the ring and weighed in at 17,500 pounds, each square inch illuminated by 687 moving lights, more than 5 million LEDs and the flash of 6,000 pieces of pyrotechnics from five locations, including the Brooklyn Bridge.

?To me, my first inspiration was the Brooklyn Bridge,? Robinson explained, as he rushed from ringside for one final backstage meeting. ?And the Statue of Liberty is it. It?s the centerpiece for us.?

Robinson expressed his elation for his latest masterpiece, which some first saw Friday night via WWE Chairman Vince McMahon?s tweeted ?#BigReveal.?

?Every WrestleMania is fun to design,? he added, ?but this one, once I got into the nitty-gritty of making a bridge and making a statue, was amazing for me as a designer.?

He continued, ?Our biggest challenge was making sure engineering could accomplish everything we wanted. It has been a labor of love of redrawing and reweighting over the last 60 days to get the engineering specs.?

While a warm homecoming for WrestleMania in the N.Y./N.J. area, the threat of Northeast cold climates and the elements challenged Robinson and the production team to develop a weather-proof experience.

?We always worry about snow, or rain and wind every time you?re outside, but this was the only time we had the ?if? of snow because of where we are,? he explained, standing mere feet away from a hall that led to the clear skies and 55-degree air of East Rutherford.

?This was the day I wanted,? a relieved Robinson laughed.

Fox threatens to become a pay-TV channel if courts greenlight Aereo, probably doesn't mean it

Fox threatens to become a payTV cable channel if courts greenlight Aereo, probably doesn't mean it

Quick: what's the difference between a broadcast TV network (Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC) and a cable channel (TBS, TNT, ESPN, etc.)? Oh, only millions and millions of viewers. Nevertheless, Fox's COO Chase Carey is perturbed enough by the mere thought of Aereo getting its way, that he's already claiming that the network will go dark in favor of becoming a cable channel -- if and when OTA network streaming over the internet is completely legalized, that is. Causticism aside, Carey's remarks are certainly indicative of how the networks feel about the potential disruption of their revenue stream, and moreover, showcases just how far we are from living in a world that isn't dominated by the same old processes when it comes to entertainment.

Carey stated: "We need to be able to be fairly compensated for our content. This is not an ideal path we look to pursue, but we can't sit idly by and let an entity steal our signal. We will move to a subscription model if that's our only recourse."

Is it possible that Fox would suddenly vanish from over-the-air antennas everywhere, screwing up countless programming agreements with a near-endless amount of partners? Sure... but it's also possible that the ninth circle of Hades will be converted into an NHL arena. We're calling your bluff, Carey.

Update: According to the New York Times, Univision chairman Haim Saban joined the saber rattling, stating that his network is ready to consider all options, including converting to pay-tv.

Bird flu mutation study offers vaccine clue

Apr. 8, 2013 ? Scientists have described small genetic changes that enable the H5N1 bird flu virus to replicate more easily in the noses of mammals.

So far there have only been isolated cases of bird flu in humans, and no widespread transmission as the H5N1 virus can't replicate efficiently in the nose. The new study, using weakened viruses in the lab, supports the conclusions of controversial research published in 2012 which demonstrated that just a few genetic mutations could enable bird flu to spread between ferrets, which are used to model flu infection in humans.

Researchers say the new findings could help to develop more effective vaccines against new strains of bird flu that can spread between humans.

"Knowing why bird flu struggles to replicate in the nose and understanding the genetic mutations that would enable it to happen are vital for monitoring viruses circulating in birds and preparing for an outbreak in humans," said Professor Wendy Barclay, from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, who led the study.

"The studies published last year pointed to a mechanism that restricts replication of H5N1 viruses in the nose. We've engineered a different mutation with the same effect into one of the virus proteins and achieved a similar outcome. This suggests that there is a common mechanism by which bird flu could evolve to spread between humans, but that a number of different specific mutations might mediate that."

Bird flu only rarely infects humans because the human nose has different receptors to those of birds and is also more acidic. The Imperial team studied mutations in the gene for haemagglutinin, a protein on the surface of the virus that enables it to get into host cells. They carried out their experiments in a laboratory strain of flu with the same proteins on its surface as bird flu, but engineered so that it cannot cause serious illness.

The research found that mutations in the H5 haemagglutinin enabled the protein to tolerate higher levels of acidity. Viruses with these mutations and others that enabled them to bind to different receptors were able to replicate more efficiently in ferrets and spread from one animal to another.

The results have important implications for designing vaccines against potential pandemic strains of bird flu. Live attenuated flu vaccines (LAIV) might be used in a pandemic situation because it is possible to manufacture many more doses of this type of vaccine than of the killed virus vaccines used to protect against seasonal flu. LAIV are based on weakened viruses that don't cause illness, but they still have to replicate in order to elicit a strong immune response. Viruses with modified haemagglutinin proteins induced strong antibody responses in ferrets in this study, suggesting that vaccines with similar modifications might prove more effective than those tested previously.

"We can't predict how bird flu viruses will evolve in the wild, but the more we understand about the kinds of mutations that will enable them to transmit between humans, the better we can prepare for a possible pandemic," said Professor Barclay.

The research was funded by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust and published in the Journal of General Virology.

'Evil Dead' rises to win the box office

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

The modestly budgeted remake of?Sam?Raimi's?1981 cult horror?pic "Evil Dead"?earned a better-than-expected $26 million in its domestic bow for a No. 1 finish. Overseas, the pic took in $4.5 million from its first 21 markets for a worldwide debut of $30.5 million.

"Evil Dead," from Sony/TriStar, FilmDistrict?and?Raimi's?Ghost House Pictures, earned a C+?CinemaScore in North America. Usually that would be problematic but horror films often receive a middling grade. The remake, appealing heavily to males (56 percent), cost $17 million to produce.

STORY: Got $35,000? You Can Watch 'Jurassic Park 3D' at Home This Weekend

It is the fourth "Evil Dead"?title and the first not to be directed by Raimi, who personally tapped?Fede?Alvarez?to direct the reboot, which follows five friends who awaken a demonic presence while visiting a cabin in rural Massachusetts. The film's strong performance marks another victory for Sony/TriStar after "The Call."

Nostalgia invaded the box office all the way around.

Universal's 3D?rerelease?of?Steven Spielberg's?"Jurassic Park"?also turned in a pleasing performance, coming in No. 4 domestically with $18.2 million, one of the top openings for a 3D redo (as a way of comparison, "Titanic 3D"?opened to $17.3 million domestically). Overseas, "Jurassic Park"?grossed $3 million from seven territories for a total opening of $21.2 million.

The 3D rerelease generated record-breaking returns for IMAX, which delivered $6 million in ticket sales -- or 32 percent of the total gross, the biggest share ever for the large-format circuit.

Universal opens the 3D?rerelease?of "Jurassic Park"?20 years after the original dinosaur movie debuted and is using the?pic?to prime audiences for "Jurassic Park IV," which rolls out in June 2014 (Spielberg is producing but not directing). Hollywood has had a mixed track record with 3D?rereleases?and will be watching closely to see how "Jurassic Park"?performs over the course of its short run (the Blu-Ray/DVD comes out in two weeks).

"The?Croods"?and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"?claimed the No. 2 and No. 3 spots on the North American box office chart, although the precise order won't be determined until Monday morning, since both films are estimating a $21.1 million weekend.

"Croods," from DreamWorks Animation and Fox, jumped the $300 million mark globally over the weekend, becoming only the second title of 2013 to do so after "Oz the Great and Powerful." "Croods"?grossed $34.1 million internationally from 62 markets for a foreign total of $206.8 million. The 3D toon has now earned $125.8 domestically for a global cume of $332.6 million.

"G.I. Joe"?raced past the $200 million mark in its second weekend of play at the global box office. The action pic, from Paramount, MGM and Skydance, boasts a domestic total of $86.7 million, while it earned $40.2 million internationally from 60 countries for a foreign total of $145.2 million and global haul of $231.9 million.

STORY: SXSW: 'Evil Dead' Rises, and the Crowd Goes Wild

Internationally, "G.I. Joe"?is already on the verge of eclipsing the $150 million earned by "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"?in its entire run.

At the specialty box office, Focus Features' "A Place Beyond the Pines"?rose up the domestic chart to No. 14 as it expanded into a total of 30 theaters in its second weekend, grossing $695,041 for a total $886,459 and location average of $23,168.

Among openers,?Danny Boyle's British thriller "Trance"?grossed a solid $136,103 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a location average of $34,206.

(AP Photo/BluePearl Veterinary Partners)

(AP) ? It took a zombie to find Disaster at the Crossroads of the World.

Two years after he disappeared from his Long Island home, Disaster the cat was found this week in the heart of Manhattan ? by a Times Square haunted house promoter dressed up as a zombie.

Jeremy Zelkowitz, who sells tickets for the Times Scare haunted house, spotted Disaster early Saturday morning crossing 42nd Street. He snatched up Disaster, a black and white cat who appeared to be well-kept and neat, and brought him to a nearby animal hospital.

"I'm a big animal lover but I have a dog so I couldn't take him," Zelkowitz, 22, said Thursday. "The whole situation is very, very bizarre."

Staff at the BluePearl Veterinary Partners animal hospital scanned Disaster who had been implanted with a microchip, revealing his last known owner: New York City police Officer Jimmy Helliesen.

Helliesen, 51, received a call Saturday morning from the hospital, informing him that his long-lost feline friend had been found.

"I was shocked," said Helliesen. "How did he get to Manhattan? That's quite an adventure."

For years Helliesen has adopted stray cats he finds hanging around his Brooklyn precinct. Two years ago he adopted Disaster after he strayed from the precinct and ended up getting captured by local Animal Care and Control. That's when Helliesen got him fixed and implanted with the chip.

But six months after living in his Long Island home, Disaster escaped one day through an open window and never returned.

Helliesen never thought he'd get the cat back ? and has since taken in eight more cats he's found around the precinct who need homes.

"Disaster makes it nine," he said. "My wife has been very understanding."

China reports 2 more cases of new bird flu virus

BEIJING (AP) ? Shanghai has reported two more cases of human infection of a new strain of bird flu, raising the number of cases in eastern China to 18. Six of the people who contracted the virus have died.

Health officials believe people are contracting the H7N9 virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there's no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people.

Shanghai's government said Saturday the latest victims are a 74-year-old peasant and a 66-year-old retiree. The city has been ordered by the agriculture ministry to halt its live poultry trade and slaughter all fowl in markets where the virus has been found.

The capital cities of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu also have suspended sales of live poultry. Both provinces have reported H7N9 cases.

MLK and me: How rookie photographer captured history

Vernon Matthews / Commercial Appeal / Landov

Photographer Richard Copley in Memphis on March 18, 1968. In his first paid job as a photographer, Copley was sent to the Mason Temple, where the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. rallied a large crowd of sanitation workers. It was the same location where King would later deliver his famous "Mountaintop" speech.

NBC News

Photographer Richard Copley with the Rev. Cleophus Smith, who was a young man when he participated in the sanitation workers' strike in 1968.

By Christina Caron, NBC News

Richard Copley was just 22 when he got his first paid job as a photographer. But that assignment propelled him into one of the most significant historical events of the 20th century -- and his career.

?I had no idea what I was stepping into,? he told NBC News during his first media interview from his home in Fisherville, Tenn. ?I guess the biggest story of my life and ironically the first.?

As the photographer for the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union, Copley was initially asked to attend the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.?s March 18, 1968, speech in Memphis, Tenn., (pictured above) where the civil rights leader spoke to thousands of sanitation workers who were fighting for better pay and improved safety standards after two Memphis garbage collectors were crushed to death by their truck?s trash compactor.

Richard Copley

The most famous of Richard Copley's sanitation strike photos featured the iconic "I Am a Man" posters carried by striking members of Memphis Local 1733 during the march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on March 28, 1968.

King promised to come back and lead a protest across the city, and on March 28, he did. At the march Copley captured what is now his most famous image: the sea of signs reading, ?I Am a Man.? It didn?t take long, however, for things to turn violent.

?You could hear the glass breaking.? I knew all hell was breaking loose. I will have to say it was exhilarating and terrifying all at once,? said Copley, who got pepper-sprayed during the event.?

Richard Copley

The National Guard arrived in Memphis on March 29, 1968, after the sanitation workers' strike turned violent.

King was quickly pulled out of the protest as the violence escalated, and the next day the National Guard showed up.

?It was frightening ? it looked like a war zone. It was just a show of force, obviously, and ... in my mind it was overreaching. But on the other hand you have to consider the time ? it was 1968, and there had been riots in other cities, so I?m sure the 'powers that be' thought it was necessary,? Copley said.

During the peaceful march held on March 29, Copley shot the image that would become his favorite, the one he called ?Dignity?: a photo of two men holding poster boards in their best Sunday attire.

That combo of their formal dress and ?the stern looks on their faces? has always stood out in Copley?s mind, he said. ?

The King family at the April 8, 1968, memorial march for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which was attended by an estimated 42,000 people and led by his widow, Coretta Scott King.

Now, 45 years later, the 67-year-old photographer still has a camera in his hand. Now, though, instead of a 35mm, he shoots video in 1080i HD. As a freelance photographer, his work has appeared on several network news broadcasts, including "Nightly News with Brian Williams." ?

Although he has covered several major events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, Copley says his most memorable assignment was in Memphis in 1968.

??What these men did was incredible,? he said. ?They were courageous. This was 1968, ? and to do what they did makes them heroes.??

Richard Copley?s photography is currently being featured at the National Civil Rights Museum?in Memphis, Tenn. The exhibit will be moved to Memphis City Hall later this month.?

During the April 8, 1968, memorial march to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who had been shot four days earlier, Richard Copley captured this image of a white man holding an African-American child. Labor groups from all over the country showed up to pay tribute to the Memphis workers and King.

It's been 45 years since Martin Luther King Jr. was killed after coming to Memphis, Tenn., to support the sanitation workers' strike. Two of the men who demonstrated in the streets that day spoke with NBC's Ann Curry about their fight to make a better community for their families.
