(AP) ? The rock was the star as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art pulled the covers off artist Michael Heizer's latest creation ? a 340-ton boulder positioned to appear as though it's floating in midair.

About a thousand people showed up under sunny skies in Los Angeles as the gigantic work titled "Levitated Mass" was unveiled Sunday on LACMA's backyard, where it is intended to remain forever.

Its centerpiece is the two-story-tall chunk of granite that was hauled 105 miles from a Riverside rock quarry earlier this year. Since then, the rock has been carefully positioned above a 465-foot-long trench that museum visitors can stroll.

From the trench, the rock appears to be hovering overhead.

The 67-year-old Heizer, who rarely appears in public, was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and led the first procession under the big rock. Along the way he waved and shook hands with museum officials and art enthusiasts.

Also Sunday, the museum opened "Michael Heizer: Actual Size," an exhibition of more than a dozen gigantic photographs showing other works by the artist.

Heizer may be best known for "Double Negative," a 1,500-foot-long land sculpture cut into a desert mesa in southern Nevada.

Heizer has planned for more than 40 years to create "Levitated Mass," but had to locate the perfect rock. He finally found one in a quarry on the outskirts of Riverside about seven years ago.

It took dozens of people and a specially built trailer to haul it over the surface streets of 22 cities.

The trip lasted nearly two weeks, with the rock traveling only at night and rarely faster than 5 mph. Thousands of people turned out to cheer it on.

To thank those who put up with road closures and other delays, the museum is granting free admission for a week to people who live in zip code areas traversed by the rock.

Tropical Storm Debby dumps wind, rain on Gulf

A powerful storm, the fourth named weather system of the season, is causing flooding and spawning twisters along the Gulf Coast. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

By NBC News and news services

Updated at?2 p.m. ET: Strong winds and heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby reached the U.S. Gulf Coast on Sunday as the storm meandered toward the Louisiana coast with 60 mph winds, the U.S. National Hurricane?Center said.

Debby, the first named storm of 2012 to enter the Gulf of Mexico, was centered about 200 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, about 105 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla.,?and was moving slowly northeast at around?5 mph at 1 p.m. CDT (2 p.m. EDT).

Some slight strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours.

Louisiana Gov.?Bobby Jindal on Sunday?declared a state of emergency as Debby threatened to flood low-lying coastal areas. Such a declaration is a primarily bureaucratic move that makes it easier for state officials to send needed supplies and workers to disaster-stricken areas.

The NHC predicted that Debby will turn west and come ashore on the eastern Louisiana coast early Thursday as a weak Category 1 hurricane. The NHC's prior forecast predicted that Debby would continue west toward the Texas coast.

Royal Dutch Shell said it had shut production on its Auger and Enchilada/Sala production platforms in the U.S.-regulated Gulf of Mexico by Sunday as workers were evacuated ahead of Debby.

The company was also preparing operations in the central and western Gulf for further shut-ins and evacuations.

Debby has already disrupted about 8 percent of Gulf offshore oil and natural gas production.

NASA via AFP - Getty Images

This Sunday handout image provided by NASA shows a satellite view of Tropical Storm Debby as it nears the northern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.

That number could climb in coming days, with Debby expected to enter some of the most prolific production areas of the Gulf, home to 20 percent of U.S. oil production and 6 percent of natural gas output.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the Louisiana coast from the Pearl River west to Morgan City, excluding the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Residents were warned to expect storm conditions within 36 hours.

"Tropical storm conditions are already near or over portions of the northeast Gulf Coast and are expected to reach the remainder of the warning area tonight," the forecasters warned.

The NHC extended the storm warning east to the Mississippi-Alabama border and along Florida's northwest coast to the Suwannee River.

The combination of storm surge and high tide could cause flooding in normally dry areas near the Louisiana coast, they said.

Debby could bring 5 to 10 inches of rain to the Gulf Coast from southeast Louisiana to the central west coast of Florida, with up to 15 inches in isolated areas.

The heaviest squalls were hitting Florida's Gulf Coast, where there were unconfirmed reports that a tornado had touched down on Saturday. Several Alabama beaches were closed due to rough surf.

A tropical storm warning was issued Sunday for Alabama to the Florida Panhandle as Debby lashed parts of the Gulf Coast with wind and rain.

Robot builds 3-D map of ancient Roman sewers

12 hrs.

Roman archaeologists are using an interesting new tool to map and study one of the ancient city's little-appreciated features: Its sewers. They've deployed a?remotely?controlled rover called an "archeo-robot" to help them create a detailed and complete map of the extensive waterways.

Ancient Rome's "cloaca maxima," Latin for greatest or largest sewer, was a marvel at the time of its use, permitting great quantities of waste water to flow away from the city center. It still functions today, draining rainwater from the historic Forum area of Rome.

A team was recently brought in to study and map the main sewer and its several secondary tunnels. To do it properly, they decided to use a little remote bot equipped with high-definition cameras, atmospheric sensors and a laser-scanning system that would capture the pipes and stones in 3-D. This will allow them to get very exact dimensions as well as an explorable model.

The results are quite cool-looking, and should be of utility to scholars and historians who have often wondered about the cloaca maxima and its construction. You can see a short video of some of the data they've collected here.

The group doing the work is called Indissoluble, and they've placed much more information regarding the archeo-robot on the project's site.

Tall Buildings, A Cut Above The Rest

A pair of Canadian skyscrapers have been dubbed the "Marilyn Monroe" towers due to their shapely form. In Abu Dhabi, twin towers are shielded from the sun by computer-controlled shading screens. Architect Antony Wood discusses features of some tall buildings that make them standouts across the world.

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

When people use words like curvy figure, breath of fresh air, veil to protect from the desert sun, it might sound like they're describing a beautiful woman from a far-off place. But in reality, these words describe the feature of a set of award-winning skyscrapers from around the world. These architectural marvels were recently recognized for their innovation, sustainability and connection to their urban surroundings.

Antony Wood is executive director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the group that named the world's best tall buildings of 2012. He's also associate professor in the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

ANTONY WOOD: Hi. Thanks for having me.

FLATOW: What makes a great building?

WOOD: Well, what makes a great tall building is a building that stands out from the normal run of the mill stuff which is - which makes up most of the tall buildings that are being built in cities around the world. The four buildings this year that we've honored from each region are definitely breaking away from the norm.

FLATOW: Let's talk about - let me just remind everybody that this is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR. Let's talk about the Absolute Towers in a suburb of Toronto. These towers were named best tall buildings of Americas. They've been named the Marilyn Monroe Towers because of their sky-high curves. They're curvy-looking, yet they - the curves serve a function.

WOOD: The curves do serve a function. And what's unique about these buildings is, again, against the backdrop of 99 percent of tall buildings being fairly boring rectilinear boxes, these are very curving organic towers, which look iconic and look incredible, but they serve a purpose.

You know, one of the main forces on a tall building are wind pressures. It's not gravity. It's about wind, you know, counteracting the wind and in some areas seismic. And so a curvilinear building helps to kind of confuse the wind and split the wind around it as opposed to creating a vertical face for the wind to blow on.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. A skyscraper overlooking the Sydney Harbor was named best tall building from Asia and Australia. Why? Why was this tall building a standout?

WOOD: Well, this, again, is a very beautiful tower, but that is innovating in that a large part of the building is naturally ventilated. And we lost our way with tall buildings in architecture generally maybe 60, 70 years ago when we had the freedom to disconnect them from their environment by creating enclosed, mechanically ventilated boxes.

So this is a, you know, a 60-story tower in Sydney which uses the wind, the ventilation, to naturally ventilate a huge atrium, which runs the full height of the building. Quite innovative.

FLATOW: You say that 95 percent of the tall buildings in the world are terribly designed.

(LAUGHTER)

WOOD: Yes. Well, you know, tall buildings tend to be designed in one or two ways. They're either extruded efficient floor plans - really, they're just commercially clad space - or they tend to be just sculptural icons.

And what concerns me about that is that, you know, I'm interested in the differences between cities, the differences between cultures, not necessarily the similarities. And architecture is homogenizing cities around the world, and tall buildings are homogenizing cities.

A tall building may become synonymous with a place, but it doesn't mean that it's born of that place. You can almost pick it up and put it in any city around the world and it would become synonymous with that city. And it denying thousands of years of vernacular architectural tradition, you know...

FLATOW: Yeah, yeah.

WOOD: ...to relate to environment and all these other things. So that's where the 95 percent figure, an arbitrary figure, comes from.

FLATOW: The Twin Towers in Abu Dhabi received the tall building innovation award. These buildings carry their own sunscreen, in a sense.

WOOD: Yeah. This is, again, completely innovative. You know, part of the problem that we have with tall buildings is building them all out of glass and then having to go to gymnastics to kind of cover them up on the outside, and we see that in America. But in intense solar environments like the desert, it makes even less sense.

This is an innovative way to control this. It actually, to my knowledge, for the first time creates this skin on the outside made up of, you know, hundreds of modules, which can open and close by computer control, depending on the angle of incident sun. So if the sun's on the other side of the building, the modules open up and allow natural daylight into the space. And if the sun is incident on the building, then those modules close up and block the sun from entering.

FLATOW: Is what makes a tall building great the ability to actually look like it fits in with the rest of the buildings in the neighborhood or the culture of the people?

WOOD: I believe so. That's - you know, as a professor, that's the thing that I advocate. I believe that a Chinese tall building or a, you know, an American tall building or a Middle Eastern tall building should be different to each other in the same way that, you know, religious and other architecture is clearly identifiable.

FLATOW: So just sticking - as you say, sticking one of these boxy buildings smack-dab just doesn't do it.

WOOD: It doesn't do it, no. And that's what's great about the Doha Tower, which we didn't discuss yet, which is the winner of the Middle East region, a project by Jean Nouvel Architects, which have a fantastic, beautiful Islamic fretwork on the outside of the building which is doing two things - one, again, it's protecting from that intense solar environment, but it's also a beautiful expression of the local culture. It's a building that if you picked up and put it down in Chicago, people would say, why is that Islamic building in the middle of our city? It's rooted into its culture.

FLATOW: All right. We're going to take a break and come back and talk more with Anthony Wood, executive director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, associate professor of the College of Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology. Our number: 1-800-989-8255. You can tweet us @scifri. We'll talk a few more minutes about tall buildings and take your phone calls. So stay with us, we'll be right back after this break. I'm Ira Flatow. This is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

FLATOW: This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. We're talking with Anthony Wood, executive director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and that group named the world's best tall buildings of 2012. Anthony, I want to talk to you about skyscrapers. Has there been a renaissance in skyscraper development lately?

WOOD: Well, I would say that renaissance is a huge understatement. What we've seen in the last 15 years is unprecedented in the history of mankind, in that we have often, throughout the 20th century, seen huge skyscraper activity. But it's tended to be regionally concentrated. You could think late 19th-century Chicago or Art Deco New York or post-Second World War Europe. But what we've seen in the last 15 years is the simultaneous construction of more and taller tall buildings across virtually the entire globe.

And although that has been, you know, held a little bit in check by the economic recession, certainly in Western countries, the interesting thing is that the global numbers of tall buildings being completed every year has continued to rise year on year, every year for the last 15 years, and will continue to do so for the next few years, despite the recession, because of Asia.

I mean the tall buildings that are coming online in China, India, Indonesia and places like that is incredible, so in terms of global numbers, absolutely increasing the number buildings and great height. So renaissance is a kind of understatement, really, to what's happened.

FLATOW: In October you're going to announce the overall winner? How are you going to decide that?

WOOD: Well, we have a jury, a seven-member jury consisting of architects and engineers, and I'm very privileged to sit on that jury. And first of all, we have to, you know, kind of whittle the many, many submissions that we have down to the four regional winners that we have already, and then it's really about debating the merits of the four buildings against each other to decide on which is the - which should get the best overall title.

It's a nice thing to do, you know, that one takes the title overall. But really, they all have such different agendas, different location, different programs inside them that it's not something that's really too serious. I think all these four buildings are excellent for a different set of reasons.

FLATOW: All right. Well, thank you very much for taking time to talk with us, and good luck on your contest.

WOOD: Thank you very much. Nice to speak to you.

FLATOW: You're welcome. Anthony Wood, executive director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and associate professor in the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Justin Bieber: Six Degrees Of Believe

MTV News dissects how Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and Ludacris ended up on Bieber's new album.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber's Believe
Photo:

Justin Bieber reached deep into the hip-hop community for the collaborations on his just-released Believe.

But, his producers on the album leave just as much a stamp on the sound of the recording as his lyrical comrades do on what it says. For that reason, while Bieber remains the star of the release, it's hard not to hear the ladies and gentlemen who worked with the 18-year-old. The collaborations stand as one of the hallmarks of the album.

Believe sounds like a who's who of music's A-list elite, who give Bieber the backup he needs to make a more mature musical statement. With names like Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Drake and his old pal Ludacris all making cameos, their appearances are highlighted by production credits with pop and hip-hop masters like Diplo, Rodney Jerkins, the Messengers, Mike Posner, Max Martin and Hit-Boy.

Looking at the roster of talent who wanted to work with the maturing pop stud, you find they are mostly artists and producers who have not only been circling Bieber for some time, but also each other.

In fact, it's easy to connect these folks in six degrees of separation: Drake and Nicki Minaj are no strangers to working with one another, having appeared most recently on "Make Me Proud" off Drake's Take Care. Nicki has also hooked up with Hit-Boy for several tracks on her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. And, Hit-Boy's association with G.O.O.D. Music was famously catalogued on Jay-Z's and Kanye West's "N---as in Paris," which makes him a close, personal friend of Big Sean. Big Sean's Believe track, "As Long As You Love Me," got the production treatment from Rodney Jerkins, who previously worked with Ludacris on his song "What Them Girls Like," which brings us back to Bieber: Bieber and Luda originally laid the foundation for a beautiful friendship on the teen's defining tune "Baby."

Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, explained the generation of all of the collaborations to MTV News:

"Kanye was like, 'You should get Big Sean on that record.' And we're close with Sean, and Sean just jumped on there. It was very natural," Braun recalled. "Luda, of course, we did 'Baby.' We played 'All Around the World,' and we were like, 'Who would make sense?' And Justin's like, 'Luda would kill it.'

"Nicki was getting on another one of our records, and then we did 'Beauty and the Beat,' and she heard it, and she was like, 'I want to get on that.' And, actually, we were gonna put Usher on it at first, but then we heard Nicki's verse, and we were like, 'Damn.' "

Of course, those collaborations came up a bit more spur of the moment, but there's one that had been long in-the-works. "The Drake thing is something he and Drake have been talking about for like two years," Braun said. "And then they finally went into the studio, and they wrote that song together. ... I'm glad that 'Right Here' came about. ... Drake was like, 'I don't want to do just a rap song. I want to sing with you, do a song for the ladies.' Everyone seems to love that song."

Correction: Chris Brown Brawl-Parker story

(AP) ? In stories June 16 through 22, The Associated Press, relying on information from San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker, erroneously reported the part of his eye he says was injured in a brawl at New York nightclub. According to his lawsuit and his lawyer, it was his cornea, not his retina.

Alistair Overeem: ?I?m all natural?

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem really wants the world to believe he is a clean fighter, even though he is currently suspended for having elevated testosterone levels before his planned fight with UFC champ Junior dos Santos.

Earlier this week, Overeem tweeted he will be back in December, but UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta said not so fast. Overeem responded by tweeting about a drug test.

"I'm doing a drug test today to build confidence with the Nevada state athletic commission and because I respect and appreciate the UFC," Overeem wrote. "And to let junior know I am a clean fighter, I'm all natural Junior.. and I am coming for you."

Well, that's a nice gesture, Alistair, but guess what? You're supposed to be clean. You don't get any medals for testing clean on random date of your choosing. This is the equivalent of teenager cleaning the house after being grounded. Though the parents may be pleased to come home to a sparkling house, they're not going to forget about the raging party that happened there days before.

The NAC isn't going to forget about his suspension, and the UFC isn't going to forget how he derailed the main event of one of their biggest cards in 2012.

July 4th Parade Entries Due June 27

Entries for Vail?s Fourth of July parade are currently being accepted through June 27 by organizers of the Vail America Days celebration. The parade will begin in Golden Peak at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4 and will end in Lionshead. The theme for parade entries is ?Team America? in honor of the athletes representing the United States during the Summer Olympic Games in London.

Vail?s parade is one of the most popular events during the Independence Day holiday, attracting thousands of spectators from throughout the region. Application forms are available at the Town of Vail Municipal Building or at www.Vail4th.com. Entries are available in seven categories: youth, marching, equestrian, motorized, merchant/business, float and most original. Fees vary from $50 for a non-profit to $200 for a business entry.

The parade will begin at Golden Peak and continue west to Hanson Ranch Road, north on Bridge Street, west on Gore Creek Drive, north across the International Bridge, west along Meadow Drive and finally through the Lionshead Mall to the finish. Volunteers are needed to help organizers keep the parade moving. Duties include holding balloons, carrying banners and assisting with traffic. Contact Lindsey Miller at 970-315-2813 for details.

New this year to Vail America Days is the addition of the Sam Adams Beer Garden and Volvo Concert Stage at Solaris Plaza in Vail Village. Music will begin at 1 p.m. and continue all day until the fireworks display at dusk. Live music from 101st Army Rock Band, Better than Bacon, The Drunken Hearts and The Congress will be featured.

Due to drought conditions this year, the fireworks display will be staged from a new location at the west end of the Vail Village parking structure to address potential dangers associated with the dry conditions. Vail America Days organizers will be using a type of low profile fireworks often used in stadiums and arenas. The show will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and the best viewing areas will be found along Meadow Drive from Slifer Square to Vail Road. Musical accompaniment will be provided from the stage at Solaris Plaza. The decision to relocate the fireworks launch away from Vail Mountain this year ensures guests will have a fireworks experience this season and eliminates the potential for last-minute cancellation. Funding for the fireworks has been increased significantly to extend the show to 20-minutes.

In addition to the parade and fireworks, Vail America Days will include activities throughout the holiday week.? For details, visit www.vail.com.

Vacuum floormat sucks the dirt off your shoes

4 hrs.

Not every futuristic technology has to be profound or revolutionary. Sometimes it's enough that it could be straight out of the Jetsons. Case in point: this floormat that vacuums dirt off the soles of your shoes when you step on it. Pairs well with a robot cleaner, and there are plenty of those to choose from as well.

Each mat is about 20 by?40 inches, and comes attached to a vacuum unit and sensor. The sensor detects when someone gets close and turns on the vacuum, but no air is actually sucked in except where a foot depresses and opens the tiny nozzles.

The system was developed by?Paionia Furyokuki, with whom Diginfo.tv caught up at a recent Japanese trade show. Watch the video below:

Naturally it's not quite as useful for snow, mud and other sole hazards, but it could probably handle those with some modifications. As it is, it could be useful in labs and clean rooms where outside particles are carefully safeguarded against; the bottoms of feet are popular vectors for contaminating dust and bacteria, so a system like this might be considered by places making such considerations.

It's a bit bulky to install at your front door, though, and at ?500,000 (around $6,250), it's really not aimed at the home market just yet. Still, it's a whimsical but still practical invention that may yet find a foothold elsewhere.
