There it stands: 1000 milli-litres of milk, sugar, cocoa, salt, carrageenan (what?s that?), artificial flavour (I don?t like the sounds of that), vitamin A and vitamin D.

And here I sit: unsure of my stomach?s ability to hold all that goodness. Mainly, I?m concerned with 24 grams of sugar per cup of the stuff, and I?m going to drink four times that much. I rack my brain for any nutrition-guide knowledge I may have retained over the years, ?How much sugar is within the acceptable limit?? I?m pretty sure that 100 grams of sugar is far too much for one meal, for sure, if not for the day. My consolation is that there are 8 grams of protein for every 24 grams of sugar. ?Surely that balances something out,? I reason as I walk home from the store with my chocolate milk.
The first half litre go down quickly and easily. It has been a couple hours since I?ve been up and I haven?t had anything to eat yet. And I love chocolate milk.
The next cup is surprisingly easy too. I?m somewhat distracted as I?m reading my Bible while having breakfast. But then it gets harder. This is where I got stuck many years ago when I first attempted this?
I was in high school and working at the ROM camp. My friend would routinely come in to work with a one litre carton of chocolate milk that he picked up at the corner store before hopping on the bus down to the museum. I loved chocolate milk even more in those days, but was still shocked by the quantity he was drinking at one time. But he wouldn?t be deterred. In fact, he started telling me that I should try the same. One morning, he came in with two chocolate milks: one for him and one for me. I heartily embraced the challenge. I sipped on the milk throughout the morning attendance taking, which was my job every day. But at the end of that, I needed to join my group, at which point it was not only inappropriate to be having breakfast while being with the kids but food in the galleries is not allowed. Sadly, I had to label my carton and stick the last quarter of my milk into the fridge to drink later in the day.
The difference then was that I had already eaten breakfast. With that in mind, I reasoned that I could successfully conquer a litre of milk this time around. But it happened: I started to feel full. Not wanting to give up, I pressed on, sipping the milk over the course of multiple minutes, admittedly ignoring my stomach?s cues to my brain.
In the end, victory! But also very full?
conquered!

Israeli official: US resisting on Iran ultimatum
JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli official said Monday that Washington's refusal to issue an ultimatum to Iran over its nuclear program brings Tehran closer to producing an atomic bomb.
Israel has been pushing for the international community to give Iran "clear red lines" with regard to the disputed program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes only. An Israeli official reiterated his country's position on Monday night, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
"Without a clear red line Iran will not cease its race toward a nuclear weapon," he said.
Israeli leaders have been hinting at a possible military strike to stop Iran from acquiring an atomic weapon. The U.S. says sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time.
Israel sees a nuclear Iran as an existential threat, due to its arch foe's frequent calls for Israel's destruction, its missile program and support for violent groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said "it is not useful to be ... setting deadlines one way or another" or to outline "red lines" for how far the U.S. can allow Iran's nuclear program to advance.
She repeated that President Barack Obama has stated unequivocally that the United States will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, and that U.S. support for Israel's security is unwavering.
But she said she would not speak about ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Israel, calling such talk "not helpful for the diplomacy."

Just over a year ago, Kim Kardashian filmed her wedding to Kris Humphries, airing it as part of a four-hour special on E! and raking in millions from the event.
The couple, of course, filed for divorce 72 days later and Kardashian now says she's learned a lot from letting cameras into her personal life in such a manner. You know, just like someone diagnosed with cancer learns how to battle against the odds and appreciate every second of life and...
... wait... what?
In a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian, Kardashian refers to this "decision in life" and explains:
"I spoke to a girl today who had cancer and we were talking about how this is such a hard thing for her, but it taught her a big lesson on who her friends are and so much about life. She's 18. And I was like, that's how I feel."
Incredibly, this insensitive, myopic, utterly ridiculous comment might not be the most non-sensical thing Kim utters in the article. Consider:
She's bigger than Lucille Ball! "When I hear people say [what are you famous for?], I want to say, what are you talking about? I have a hit TV show. We've shot more episodes than I Love Lucy! We've been on the air longer than The Andy Griffith Show! I mean, these are iconic shows, so it blows my mind when people say that."
She's earned the success of her TV show! "If everyone could do [be on a reality TV show], everyone would. It doesn't make sense to me."
She's talented because she's famous! "What is my talent? Well, a bear can juggle and stand on a ball and he's talented, but he's not famous. Do you know what I mean?"
She'd get married on TV all over again! "You never say never. Because who knows? So many other people I know have gotten married on TV and it has worked out amazing for them."
It's nice to see this new and improved Kardashian has learned that life lesson, isn't it?

Fans (or stalkers in this case) can be very scary! A 40-year-old man claiming to be married to Miley Cyrus has been arrested at her home.
Jason Luis Rivera, who claims to have been friends with the 19-year-old singer for five years, climbed over a fence at Miley?s gated mansion in Los Angeles, where he turned up with a pair of black and green scissors.
He started banging on the door and then hid in bushes in the garden when police officers arrived at the scene. Police soon realized where Rivera was hiding when he started lighting candles and they threatened to taser him if he did not come out with his hands up.
As he was led away by officials, a local TV station heard him telling officers: ?I am friends with Miley Cyrus. I am. She?s my wife. Me and Miley have been friends for five years.??
Rivera ? who had scissors, money, notes and ID in his pockets ? had what seemed to be a tie around his neck, but when officers tugged on it a large pink heart appeared from his chest.
Lieutenant Brian Wendling, of Los Angeles Police, said: ?Rivera thinks they were married. I would say delusional is a good characterization of him.?
According to sources, he ?has a lengthy record in Texas, including a trespassing charge.?

'Dancing' pro Maks: I 'probably' regret outbursts

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy just can't get away from questions about his sometimes strong feelings about the show's judges.
When he appeared on the season four premiere of "The Wendy Williams Show" Monday, his host asked him about his notorious knack for calling out Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli on live TV. (And she approves!)
"So you've been very outspoken to the judges, which I've always been a champion of that. You've always told those judges where to stick it!" said Wendy, who was partnered with pro Tony Dovolani in season 12. "Do you ever regret that stuff, Maks?"
"That stuff" she's referring to includes telling Len it was time for the judge to retire after dissing soccer star Hope Solo, and famously declaring that "Dancing" was "my show."
After a bit of a hesitation, the ballroom bad boy admitted, "Probably." He went on to explain that when he thinks about his various past outbursts, "there's a very small, half a second of me going, 'That probably wasn't a good idea.' Then I go, 'Nah. That was fine.' "
Judging from how fans of the show have often sided with Maks' criticism of the panel, he's probably right. (Besides the fact that the drama makes for great TV.) But regardless of whether his rants are appropriate, Williams ? who faced some tough criticism from the judges herself ? has Maks' back.
"They need to clear out the judges and get new ones," she said frankly.
"Dancing With the Stars" returns with an all-stars season that kicks off on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC. Maks will once again be paired with actress Kirstie Alley, who also participated in season 12.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.?The 2012 Democratic National Convention is over, and for those who weren't glued to C-SPAN all week, we've got you covered.
Here are six of the must-see speeches from the convention. The list does not include addresses from candidates or their spouses:
Former President Bill Clinton
Clinton arguably had the best speech of the convention, an address in which he often veered from his prepared remarks and went on for nearly 50 minutes. The former president used his time to offer a point-by-point rebuttal of Republican challenger Mitt Romney?and by all appearances, he had fun doing it.
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro
Castro used his time as Tuesday's keynote speaker to address the middle-class voter, with a focus on President Barack Obama's policies intended to create economic security.
Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver
A United Methodist pastor by trade, Missouri Rep. Cleaver brought the delegates to their feet?and some even to tears?several times during his passionate speech.
Then, he began marching in place. Definitely a must-watch.
Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm
Your location during Granholm's speech may make a difference in your opinion of her delivery. For those in the convention hall, Granholm's enthusiasm ignited a frenzy in the room. Those watching at home, however, might view it more like Howard Dean's famous "Scream" speech in 2004.
Sandra Fluke
Fluke's speech Wednesday night surprisingly was pushed into the prime-time hour, where she served as an attack dog against Romney.
Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren
Warren is engaged in one of the most high-profile congressional races in the country. The DNC speech was an opportunity to introduce herself to the country, although she may have been overshadowed by Clinton.

Who'll See It:?The Romney campaign spent $4.5 million to air 15 ads in eight states, including Ohio, the A.P.'s Steve Peoples reports. So while the area it covers is broad, there aren't a ton of ads airing in each state.
Who It's For: Obama gets higher approval ratings on defense than he does on the economy. So the ad tries to weaken his standing on the first issue and take advantage of his vulnerability on the second.
What Everyone Else Thinks: The footage the ad uses from Tampa is about jobs, not national security. That's because Romney didn't talk very much about national security. He didn't mention Afghanistan at all.
The Effect: The only thing memorable about this ad is that it frames national security as an unemployment issue. But it's not very convincing. We have an enormous military for reasons other than keeping Ohioans employed, right? C
The Ad:?Mitt Romney, "A Better Future: Virginia - Energy"
The Issues:?Energy regulations as job killers.
The Message: Again, using footage from the RNC, Romney says we're not better off than when Obama took office, because Obama's "war on coal, gas, and oil is crushing energy and manufacturing jobs."
Who'll See It:?Virginia is the only state where the Romney campaign is airing three different ads over the next several days.
Who It's For: People who cry filling up their gas tank. Which is just about anyone who has to fill up a gas tank.
What Everyone Else Thinks: There's no explanation for how repealing Obama's "excessive regulations" will create 340,000 new jobs in Virginia.
The Effect: The campaign is arguing that every Obama policy can in some way be blamed for the unemployment rate. B
The Ad:?Mitt Romney, "A Better Future: Florida - Home Values."
The Issues:?The fallout from the housing crisis.
The Message: The ad blames Obama for the fact that "home values collapsed." Romney will "provide alternatives to foreclosure" and "end the mortgage lending freeze."
Who'll See It:?Floridian TV viewers.
Who It's For: In June, home prices in 20 cities rose for the first time since 2010. South Florida was hit hard by the housing bubble, but has seen seven straight months of housing price increases. Still, prices are still way below what they were before the housing bubble burst.?
What Everyone Else Thinks: Speakers at the Democratic National Convention attacked Romney for saying last year, "As to what to do for the housing industry specifically, and are there things you can do to encourage housing? One is, don't try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom."
The Effect: Again, it's a standard boring political ad, and the "alternatives to foreclosure" is frustratingly vague. But at least it addresses an issue that really affects locals.?B

Report: Gaming community suffering from shrinkage | VentureBeat
The total number of gamers in the U.S. is shrinking, according to a new report from market research company The NPD Group.
In its Gamer Segmentation 2012: The New Faces of Gamers report, The NPD Group states an estimated 211.5 million people in the U.S. play video games, a 5 percent decline compared to 2011. The amount of people playing mobile and digital games has increased since last year, however, undoubtedly due to the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablets.
Mobile gamers saw a 9 percent increase to 22 percent and are now the largest segment of the gaming community, while digital gamers went up 4 percentage points to 16 percent. All other segments declined, NPD said, including core gamers, family and kid gamers, light PC gamers, and avid PC gamers.
?Given the long lifecycles of the current consoles and the increasing installed base of smartphones and tablets, it?s not surprising to see a slight decline in the core gamer segment,? said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier.
Frazier added while the number of core gamers has dropped, their revenue contribution continues to outpace all other segments, and is vital to the future of the industry. Core gamers reported spending $65 on physical games in the last three months, according to The NPD Group, while other segments spent an average of $48 in the same time period. They also spent more on microtransactions and other additional game content than other groups. Close to 14 percent of total gamers said they purchased DLC or made microtransactions; about 27 percent of those people were core gamers.

Genes associated with primary angle closure glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in Chinese people
ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2012) ? Singapore scientists have identified three new genes associated with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), a leading cause of blindness in Chinese people. PACG affects 15 million people worldwide, 80% of whom live in Asia.
The discovery, published Aug. 26 in the journal Nature Genetics, was conducted collaboratively by scientists from the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI)/Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), National University of Singapore (NUS), National University Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The team of scientists led an international consortium that carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1,854 PACG cases and 9,608 controls of over five sample collections in Asia. They performed validation experiments in another 1,917 PACG cases and 8,943 controls collected from a further six sample collections from around the world. A total of 1,293 Singaporeans with PACG and 8,025 Singaporean controls were enrolled in this study. This work is the first to study PACG genetics using a genome-wide perspective.
This finding confirms the long-standing suspicion of Professor Aung Tin, the lead Principal Investigator of this project, who is Senior Consultant and Head of Glaucoma Service at SNEC, Deputy Executive Director at SERI, and Professor of Ophthalmology at NUS. Prof Aung has worked on PACG for over 10 years and believes from clinical observations that the disease is strongly hereditary.
"This provides further evidence that genetic factors play a role in development of PACG," said Prof Aung. "It is a major achievement for our Singapore team leading the largest international consortium of doctors and scientists involved in glaucoma research. The results may lead to new insights into disease understanding and open the possibility of novel treatments in the future as well as the potential of early identification of people at risk of the disease."
The study showcases one of many exciting scientific collaborations between GIS and SERI, and highlights the importance and significant advantages of inter-disciplinary collaborations between the two institutes under such joint efforts. The study was funded primarily by the Translational Clinical Research (TCR) program grant from the National Research Foundation that was awarded to SERI in 2008, as well as other grants from the National Medical Research Council (NMRC), Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), and funding from GIS.
GIS Acting Executive Director Prof Ng Huck Hui congratulated the team on the success of the project. "This is an exemplary demonstration of the potential power in genomics being used to dissect complex human diseases with hereditable predispositions. The collaboration between SERI and GIS is synergistic in many broad aspects, and it marries core strengths from both institutions."
Prof Wong Tien Yin, Executive Director at SERI and Provost's Chair Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, NUHS, said, "This is a landmark finding, and may potentially change how we view PACG as a disease with genetic links. It highlights how a collective effort from scientists and clinicians and clinician-scientists can unravel diseases of major importance to Singapore. Because this disease is more common in Asians than in the Western populations, such studies will not be done in the US/Europe. This study has to be done in Asia as it is a disease with more implication for Asians. As such, Singapore has led the way forward."
Dr Khor Chiea Chuen, Principal Investigator, Human Genetics, at GIS added, "Modern genomics is a very powerful tool in dissecting the hereditable basis of common human diseases. It gives all of us a ray of hope, however far-fetched it may be, that one day we will be able to tailor treatments based on individual genetic profile."
"The information on genes involved in PACG has also opened up new and exciting research areas for us that we hope will culminate in new treatment modalities for angle closure glaucoma in the future," Said Dr Eranga Vithana, Associate Director, Basic and Experimental Sciences at SERI, and lead author of the paper.
Prof Janey Wiggs, Paul Austin Chandler Assoc. Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School added, "This is a landmark study identifying three genes that contribute to angle-closure glaucoma, a form of glaucoma that is particularly common in Asians. These data are the first critical steps toward a better understanding of the underlying molecular events responsible for this blinding disease."
SERI is the national body for ophthalmic and vision research in Singapore based at SNEC and NUS. The GIS is a research institute under the umbrella of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore.

All regions showed a decline except North America, where sales of the new Windows-based Lumia line offset declines in traditional Symbian devices. Sales of all cellphones fell 5 percent to 83.7 million.
? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase. But average selling prices for both products were down. Apple sold 4 million Macs, a 2 percent increase, and 6.8 million iPods, a 10 percent decline.
TomTom says it sold 1.7 million personal-navigation devices in North America, down from 2.1 million a year ago. In Europe, it sold 2.4 million, down from 2.8 million.
