Before The Rubber Hits the Road

Even though Lao Tzu defines a good traveler as with ?no fixed plans and not intent on arriving?, treating a road trip like an improvisation might not be such a bright idea after all. Any experienced traveler will agree that no matter how much one plans a road trip, not everything can be foreseen and hence improvisation is beyond doubt, a part of the travel game.

The most important fact to understand is why? Why are you taking this road trip? Is it a romantic getaway or is it meant for family fun? Are you going to satisfy your wanderlust with historic explorations or is it going to be wine tasting for the peace of your taste buds? Whether you?ve set out to discover crafts, antiques, festivals or an outdoor adventure, a long term weather forecast will help you determine the viability of your plans.

Especially if it is meant to be a light-hearted scenic encounter with nature!

For example, a road trip in any part of the United Kingdom can be memorable if you cleverly avoid the heavy rainfall like one experienced in Cardiff or pace yourself suitably on the east coasts of Scotland. Very rich in wildlife habitats, landscapes, the twisting and winding Scottish coastline has a good road network to encompass majors like Edinburgh, Fraserburgh and Aberdeen. In this case, knowing Aberdeen weather during the year would shed sufficient light on what to expect steering through the Scottish east coast.

On-the-move snacks and other essentials like comfortable clothing, extra sheets in case temperature drops, pillows, road maps, tents for camping, favorite music, video-games for children or old-school games like making sentences out of number plate alphabets, bingo and so on are generally the things never forgotten. The things that are, include first-aid kits especially for adventure-seekers, allergy meds, drinks including water, flashlight, extra cash in case of emergencies and a phone with inter-state or global connectivity.

A definite plan of action could always help like having a set number of spots to cover. A good route would be that which has dine-ins or motels on it, for timely meals and rest. Health problems of those packed in can be a big setback. Gas stations or garages on the way would ensure safety. It?s also a good idea to take breaks, get out of the vehicle and stretch a bit, maybe play games like Frisbee or catch-ball.

A great scheme is to make each person on the vehicle responsible for atleast one thing. Someone could be the DJ while someone else could be the navigator. Say you?re in Northern Ireland; someone could be the weatherman and check up on Belfast weather. Making the road trip a team effort would not only improve its chances of success but also make it a relaxing and easy task. As Buddha says ?it?s better to travel well than arrive?.

When the world gives you negative news, the smart start planning ...

Fidelity Investment?s Peter Drake urges Canadians to see beyond the
headlines and introduces the Top 10 reasons why Canada is a great place
to retire

VANCOUVER, May 28, 2012 /CNW/ ? Addressing the Canadian Institute of
Financial Planners annual national conference today in Vancouver,
Fidelity Investment?s Peter Drake highlighted the disconnect many
Canadians may be feeling about their retirement prospects given the
almost constant barrage of negative economic and business news
surrounding them.

In his presentation to attendees, entitled The Shift to Retirement Income: Beyond the Headlines, Drake, who is Fidelity?s Vice President of Retirement and Economic
Research, urged financial advisors and their clients to put the
negative news in context and not become paralyzed with fear.? The
presentation focused on the positive role financial advisors can play
in helping investors focus on what they want to achieve in retirement
so that they can properly plan and emotionally prepare for this life
transition.

?Everywhere you turn these days, you can find headlines about the
slowing global economy, the need to work longer, underfunded pensions
and how Canadians are not saving enough for retirement. While there may
be truth in these views, they often sensationalize the actual
situation,? said Drake. ?What we don?t read enough of is that Canada is
one of the best places in the world to retire. Look at our solid
economic position, our healthcare system and the demand for older
workers. There?s little doubt that Canada is attractive for both people
retiring as well as those who want to work past the traditional
retirement age.?

Top 10 reasons why Canada is a great place to retire?

To balance concerns Canadians may be seeing and hearing about the state
of retirement in Canada, Fidelity introduces the Top 10 reasons this
country provides many truly great retirement opportunities:

10. Canada?s labour market provides opportunities for older Canadians: The participation rate of older workers in Canada is on the rise and
Fidelity?s research found that 79% of pre-retirees expect to work at
least part-time in retirement. Contrary to what one might expect, their
reasons for working in retirement are not purely financial. Top reasons
included the desire to stay mentally or physically active and keeping
busy to help pass the time. On the demand side of the equation,
employers are increasingly looking to older workers to provide much
needed experience as the number of new entrants to the workforce slows.
A combination of both growing supply and demand for older workers
forecasts a positive outlook for Canadians in the years ahead.
9. Rising Canadian housing prices have added wealth for boomers: The net worth of Canadians has increased substantially as Canada?s
housing market took off over the past decade. While there may be
concerns about overheating in some urban markets, it is likely that
most retirees and near retirees who purchased homes in the prime of
their accumulation years, could weather a housing correction and still
have added value that could be used to generate income in retirement if
needed.
8. Canada?s fiscal position in good standing relative to other countries: The Canadian government?s deficit and debt position is in good shape
relative to much of the developed world. For Canadians, this strong
fiscal standing helps ensure the sustainability of the types of
retirement benefits Canadians rely on for the foreseeable future.
7. Workplace pension coverage likely to improve: While there are ongoing discussions about which route governments should
take to improve employee pension coverage including adopting Pooled
Registered Pension Plans or enhancing the Canada Pension Plan, it is
positive that the federal and provincial governments are actively
looking for ways to help Canadians better prepare for retirement.
6. Low and predictable inflation: The strong record of the Bank of Canada of keeping inflation low and
predictable is very positive for retirees. Inflation affects retirees
more than any other demographic group as it can reduce the purchasing
power of their savings. Inflation that is both low and predictable is
one of the most important aspects to planning for twenty to thirty
years of retirement.
5. Flexibility in Canada?s retirement system for saving, investing and
generating income
:? Canada has a flexible retirement income system. There is more than one
way to save and invest for retirement and more than one way to generate
retirement income.? This means that Canadians have choices about what
works for them.
4. Health Care ? 70/30 rule: 70% of expenses are covered by the government,
30% by the individual
: Fidelity research in the United States concluded that Americans should
save $240,000 for health care in retirement1 ? a cost most Canadians won?t have to face. While everyone in Canada is
covered for basic health care expenses, Canadians do need to be aware
of what they are covered for and plan for potential out-of-pocket
health costs. The good news is that it is unlikely that Canadians will
be hit with an unexpected, catastrophic medical bill.
3. Sustainability of Canada?s Public Pension system: The federal government?s actuary regularly checks the health of the
Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and it has been declared solvent to pay all
its liabilities for at least the next 75 years.
2. Canadian life expectancy among highest in the world:? Canadians are living longer, healthier and more active lives than ever
before. Retirements of 25 plus years are now the norm, not the
exception. To enjoy this gift of time, Canadians need a written
retirement plan to help ensure they do not outlive their savings.
Fidelity?s research shows that only 23% of respondents have a written
retirement income plan, a number that hasn?t changed in the seven years
of Fidelity conducting research in Canada. This number needs to
increase.
1. Canada is a great place to live: Canada is recognized globally as one of the best countries in the world
to live. From stable governments, to strong individual rights,
accessible health care, and abundant resources from clean water to
commodities envied by the rest of the world, Canada has enormous wealth
and the ability to provide for its citizens. With proper planning,
retirees can live the lifestyle they plan for filled with
opportunities.

Drake concluded by reiterating the importance of having a retirement
plan. ?There?s always a reason not to plan for retirement,? said Drake.
?Investors could pick any year from the 1987 crash to the tech bubble
to the recent financial crisis and ongoing market volatility ? there
will always be something to focus on versus thinking about retirement
planning.? We know from our research that Canadians who have taken the
time needed to prepare for their retirement are feeling good about
their future.? While the news of the day might be daunting, you have a
better chance of living the life you want in retirement if you take the
time now to plan, save and invest for your future.? And you?d be smart
to get professional financial advice.?

Tips To Avoid Problems Of A Distant Relationship | Submit RSS Feed

Posted on 29th May 2012 in Uncategorized

Are you wondering if you can manage a long distance relationship? Don?t let the uneasy feeling in the start bog you down with negative sentiments. Read this article to get some of the suggestions on how to keep such a relationship alive.

Certain things need to be decided before you both start living far away so there is no risk to the relationship. The discussion could help you both come up with some sort of boundaries which is going to avoid any of you from getting disappointed in future.

You?ll have to shell out much more time in talking to each other than you ever did before. You are going to be surprised to see how easy it is to maintain a relationship like this if you really want work towards it.

Talk to your partner everyday and discuss with him things going on in your life and ask them to do the same. Phone call them or text them or even skype them using an internet connection as often as you can. Just watch how you thrive in managing your distant relationship by communicating once or twice a day only. Today with the change in technology, it has become extremely easy to keep in touch with each other.

Jealousy is a really horrible issue in most long distance relationships that hasn?t been completely tackled by anyone yet. If you want to make this relationship succeed, you will need to try and limit down this problem to as much as you can. Being jealous is not going to take you anywhere close to success in managing the relationship, in fact it will deteriorate your chances. I?d suggest you to try and give more freedom to your partner and have more relaxed rules of relationship together.

If you wish to maintain the spice in your relationship, you must have those intimate and personal talks with your partner sometimes. You will be surprised to see the positive effects of this in your relationship, just try it out.

To succeed in this kind of relationthip, you will need to learn how to compromise, not a little but a lot. You must learn how to compromise and yet stay very happy and only then would your relationship emerge successful. You can still survive a normal relationship with a tad bit of compromises but a long distance one will just demand a lot more.

If you?re having any kind of difficulty with your distant relationship, try to adhere to my guidelines mentioned above.

Accrued Interest: 5 Growth Sectors Worth Investing In

One of the hardest parts of investing is finding a growth sector that you can believe in. Talk to any stock market 'specialist' and he or she will tell you about buying in early to an industry that is about to take off. The Internet and financial circles are full of tips and premonitions regarding stocks and markets that are about to fly into the stratosphere, but the truth is most of this is thinly disguised guesswork, deductions based on smatterings of evidence and hearsay. Sometimes the best investing guide is to look at macroscopic trends in society, over-arcing patterns that are effecting the economy in multiple ways. What industries are actually growing and what factors are there that could impede this growth? If you can find no logical roadblock to stop an industry that's growing by leaps and bounds, it could make for a lucrative investment. That's why the following industries are considered by many to be extremely promising growth sectors: Life sciences The advances in the life sciences field have been nothing short of remarkable in recent years. Improved micro-arrays have increased our ability to study the human genome and fashion new pharmaceuticals. So has microfluidics and gene therapy. Biotechnology applications have also used artificial selection and hybridization in order to improve the domestication of animals and the cultivation of plants. The growth of life sciences has seen the evolution of findings that used to be contained in Ivory Towers leak down to have extremely valuable real-world applications in everything from agriculture to health care. The government has even invested in life sciences in order to ramp up its efforts to protect against bioterrorism. As advances continue to be made in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agrochemical and industrial chemical fields entrepreneurs who make a considerable life sciences investment are likely to see good to great returns if they are prudent and look for smart value plays. Green engineering Green engineering jobs are expected to see meteoric growth in the coming years as more and more homeowners and businesses renovate and upgrade their houses and office buildings in order to be more energy-efficient. Alternative energy is also expected to be a major growth sector, but picking out specific companies in this field will be a harder to do because of the political uncertainties inherent in the industry. On the other hand, green engineering projects don't require an entirely new infrastructure and are likely to be heavily invested in by both private firms and federal agencies because of their ability to both produce jobs and save money. Additionally, new regulations mandating certain CO2 emission levels will force many businesses to commission new installations. Many engineering education programs are now focusing intensely on green engineering, attempting to train a new generation of engineers to take seriously the challenge of energy efficiency and sustainable city planning. Digital information You don't have to look far to see the wide-ranging impact of digital information technology. Smartphones, high-speed Internet, GPS, and cloud services are now taking over our professional landscapes, changing the way businesses operate and the way people communicate with each other. It's no longer necessary for some colleagues to even be in the same room in order to have business meetings anymore; students can earn their degrees remotely; investors can organize their portfolios and move their money around while in transit. While a long term investment may be difficult in the digital information field?due to its ever-changing nature?short term goals could reap a significant harvest. Augmented reality, VoiP services, open source online education tools, and place-based messaging apps are all popular right now and are expected to grow in the near future. In particular, mobile Internet use is expected to continue to flourish, adding to the lure of companies who are building up 4G LTE network connections and other high-speed broadband systems. Clean technology Clean technology has seen a considerable uptick in funding since President Barack Obama was elected and we can expect that trend to continue if is he is reelected. Even before Obama was elected, the clean tech train was in motion. In 2007, $148 billion was invested in clean technology. This includes federal subsidies for renewable energy, information technology, green transportation, electric motors, and a wide range of projects attempting to reduce environmental pollution. By 2018, biofuels, wind power and solar photovoltaics will be $325+ billion dollar industries, making it one of the more promising fields for venture capitalists. Clean technology stocks in China and India have grown steadily for years now because of considerably federal investments. If similar efforts are made here, it is possible that clean technology could become one of the most promising investments on the market. Advanced technology Advanced technology is generally defined as the use of innovative technology to upgrade or improve a product or commercial process. In recent years this has included advances in computer technologies, high performance computing, high precision technologies, robotics, automation control systems, sustainable technologies, and new industrial technologies. Advanced technology can be hard to pin down, which at first could make it an unattractive investment. But the government, including the White House, has been enthusiastic about this field. Obama even put forth a $1 billion dollar proposal for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, which would create a network of institutes all across the country working on advanced manufacturing projects. The President has also recently submitted a budget for the National Institute of Standards and Technology that would significantly increase funding for the research facilities working on these projects. While no investor can be 100% certain that a particular company's stock will rise exponentially, following the trends in a particular growth sector can be a worthwhile strategy. It will also be necessary to track a company's financials over the course of many seasons, assessing the way it adapts to change. It may behoove you to invest in a mutual fund, which encompasses a wide-ranging portfolio of stocks in a certain industry. Therefore, your money is not dependent on the performance of any one company, but rather the overall growth of a network of technologies and processes. A mutual fund in any of the preceding industries would be highly likely to accrue value over the course of time and is much safer than buying a single stock. But this requires the investor being able to keep the money in the market over many years, possibly even a decade or more. If you're looking for short-term earnings, you will have to wing it like the rest of us. But at least you'll be starting in a verdant field that is primed for growth.

Accessory Logitech bluetooth keyboard for ipad -works for NOTE!!!

Hi

I thought i'd share this with you.

I just bought a Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard which specifically is promoted as "FOR IPAD" for my galaxy note. It works very well indeed. No pairing issues and MOST keys are fully compatible including the shift characters on the top row and the function volume up down, media controls, home button etc.

a couple of mislabled keys Ive yet to find th ' and @ keys and ? and $ but these can be input via the virtual kb anyhow, so now biggie.

The thing types beautifully - i can touch type like with my laptop. Even some short cut keys for emails work, like ctrl N ctrl F, etc

very nice, recommended 95% i would say...

the main thing is to note this product is marketed as for IPAD but it works for android (the Note at least)

Also it has a nifty case which doubles as a stand for the note whilst typing or watching vids, etc.

Business Reference Site ? Starting A Small Online Business

> Online Business > Starting A Small Online Business

If you have been surfing around the web for a while you have probably heard about people making money or starting an extremely successful online business. Even though these stories cover the web and want you to pay a bunch of money so you can also make money they very rarely tell you the whole truth. Online business is anything, but easy and very rarely can you set up a residual income meaning you don?t need to constantly work for income. In most cases you will have to fight for every visitor and every dollar you get. This is the usual case so if you have been thinking you would like the chance to make money online then try building a simple small online business and seeing where it takes you. The first step will be of course setting up your online business, next will be learning internet marketing, and finally it will be necessary to learn how to make money from the traffic you generate.

Creating an online business is not nearly as complicated as many make it out to be. You can do this for free at one of the many resources out across the web such as wordpress.com or 000webhost.com. For those a little more serious about making a living online you may want to consider purchasing unlimited hosting though it is not mandatory. Once you have a platform that you can create the presence it is time to think of a niche which you thoroughly enjoy. A niche is what bloggers and webmasters call the topic of a website. A couple good examples of a niche include ?internet marketing?, ?online business?, or ?fishing?. Pick something that you truly love so when times are rough you don?t give up on the business.

If you create your online business go ahead and monetize it quickly with affiliate programs or PPC publishing. Some of the affiliate programs I found pay the highest commissions are get paid to take survey programs. The reason they are extremely easy to market is they are free for your audience and will actually help them begin to earn money. If you want to post some basic ads then go to Google adsense or chitika. Both will be free for you to join and will allow you to create simple ads to post on your website which will allow you to earn money every time a visitor clicks on an ad.

Saving the best for last it is time to talk about internet marketing and content creation. This is where millionaires are made those who create content that shoot across the web like a virus. You will need to learn some basic internet marketing such as SEO, link building, and branding which you can do in webmaster forums such as v7n.com/forums/ or on the major blogs out there. Really though your success will be seen in your ability to write content which touches people making them want to link to you and share your content across the web. Focus on creating content constantly becoming an expert content creator and try to fill the black holes within your niche that have not been covered. The best way to see if content has already been written is going to Google and searching for the title. If there are no posts or articles for the title then by all means write and publish the article.

The Best Of Free Online Gaming: Aion | The Reticule

Welcome to the series of articles that is to hopefully become a record of The Best Of Free Online Gaming*. We here at The Reticule know that not everyone has the spare cash to spend on every AAA or indie release, or to sign up to monthly payments for all the latest MMO?s. Trouble is, if you?re looking for some free gaming there are literally hundreds of games taking up the free-to-play structure nowadays and trawling through them all to find ones that are worthwhile can take up a lot of time. I aim to bring you some mini reviews on a variety of the best free-to-play games the internet has to offer, saving not just your money but your sanity too. Last time we took at look at the newly released Tribes: Ascend, a fast paced and skilful FPS. Today we will be taking a look at NCsoft?s Aion.

*Disclaimer ? Games included in ?The Best of Free Online Gaming? are entirely chosen through opinion of the writer. This is coming from a guy who apparently likes to ?camp like a noob? so please feel more than free to disclose your disgruntled disapproval in a long-winded comment below. Better yet let me know why YOUR game of choice should be included in this list.

Aion

Originally released by NCsoft in 2008 exclusively in South Korea, Aion has since gained world-wide popularity for its gameplay style and ?refreshing look? graphically. Winning awards such as Best MMO and Best Online Game in 2009 and receiving expansions in 2010 and 2011 the game and its community are still very active. In 2012 Aion became free-to-play and unlike many other F2P MMO?s, offers no restrictions in terms of quests, gameplay or exploration for the non paying player. However there are some restrictions on the amount and kind of trading you can do.

Aion is set in Atreia, a planet consisting of two halves of a shell-like world connected down the middle by the tower of Eternity. The tower was damaged during the Millennium war and ever since rifts have been appearing near the centre of the tower. This area has been cleverly developed to house Aion?s unique style of PvPvE combat in which players from both factions can confront each other whilst also confronting many of the NPC?s that can be found within the three levels of the Abyss. Here can also be found many of the raid and dungeon instances that players will progress through during each factions storyline.

Atreia consists of two playable factions. The Asmodians who reside in the upper half of the planet, and the Elyos who reside in the lower half of the planet. The land occupied by the Asmodians is untouched by the sun, leading them to become a tough and merciless but very loyal race. However, the land on the lower half of the planet, occupied by the Elyos, is rich, fertile and beautiful but with this beauty comes arrogance that had led the Elyos to misguidedly believe they are blessed.

There are a few things that make Aion stand out among the other MMO?s mentioned in this series. The artistic direction is refreshingly eastern giving a whole new style to characters and areas within the world. There are over three thousand story driven quests, many with cutscenes and voice acting, which is often a rare occurrence in many MMO?s. In many cases your character will not need a mount to travel and will instead use wings which allow for fierce and very enjoyable mid-air combat.

If you?re into your fantasy gaming but have never experienced an eastern styled MMO before then you?re in for a treat with Aion. The style of gameplay, graphics, customisations and story focused questing really blend together well to create a fun and challenging environment for you to play in. Whilst not breaking many moulds in the world of MMO?s and F2P there is definitely a fresh and enjoyable vibe around the game.

Telairity Encoders for Sichuan DTV Broadcasting and China Telecom IPTV

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012?

Local and national SARFT agencies agree on Telairity encoders for two new head-ends in Sichuan; China Telecom selects Telairity for nationwide IPTV system

BEIJING ? U.S.-based Telairity, Inc., the global leader in encoding technology, announced today two more major milestones in providing encoding technology equipment to the People?s Republic of China: the sale of multi-channel SD 7000 series encoders as the cornerstone of an advanced digital TV (DTV) terrestrial network being installed throughout Sichuan Province; and the sale of its ultra-low bitrate SD/mobile 9000 series encoders for China Telecom?s nationwide IPTV system.

China Telecom Corporation, serving more than 340 million wireline, broadband, and mobile customers, is currently deploying a nationwide IPTV network. The first 9000 series encoders are being installed in XinJiang Province, accounting for about one-sixth of the country?s land area.

In November, 2011, the Chinese government mandated that the DTV network being installed in Sichuan, based on China?s Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) standard, must extend throughout the country by the end of 2012 with over 3000 broadcast locations (replacing older MPEG-2 installations). For video encoding, the new network will use AVS technology, an advanced compression standard developed in China.

Sichuan?s local SARFT agency (State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television), working with both the national SARFT office in Beijing and Sichuan Luyang Science & Technology Co. Ltd., Telairity?s local Sichuan partner , has ordered the Telairity encoders for the province-wide DTV terrestrial network. Telairity has provided two complete 80-channel head-end systems.

For TV broadcasting, the network will use DTMB technology: the China DTV standard for mobile and fixed terminals. Telairity encoders support DTMB together with all other digital broadcast standards.

Noted Ben Silva, Telairity Senior VP of Worldwide Sales and Business Development, ?These DTV and IPTV deployments will be blueprints for using China technologies like AVS and DTMB to deliver efficient, cost-effective high quality video over advanced content delivery networks. We wish to thank our partner, Sichuan Luyang Science & Technology Co. Ltd., both the national and provincial Sichuan SARFT agencies, and China Telecom for the opportunity to participate in these truly historic projects.?

Boating Tips - Conserving Fuel | Stratum Insurance Agency News

High fuel prices are an unpleasant fact of life for today?s boaters. But taking these six actions conserves fuel without diminishing fun on the water.

1. Tune the engine. Change the oil and spark plugs regularly to ensure top performance.

2. Fresh fuel is always best. Old fuel that has been sloshing around in the tank for months can hurt engine performance.

3. Clean the hull. Scale and growths undermine the boat?s ability to glide through the water, which means the engines burn more fuel.

4. Lighten the load. The more weight the boat carries, the harder the engines work.

5. Check the propellers. Nicks and dents not only rob fuel mileage, they also increase engine wear through excessive vibrations.

6. Plan ahead. Use up-to-date charts and other navigation aids to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible, and to maintain correct cruising speed and trim angles.

Arrest made in 1979 disappearance of Etan Patz

Pedro Hernandez, 51, has confessed to strangling the boy who went missing more than three decades ago. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

Updated at 7:53 p.m. ET: A former bodega stock clerk has been arrested for allegedly luring 6-year-old Etan Patz off a New York City street with the promise of a soda before strangling him in a development that police say solves a case that has mystified New York City for decades.

Etan (pronounced ay-tahn) vanished on his way to a school bus stop 33 years ago Friday. The case drew international attention and changed the way parents felt about letting their young children go off alone.

Police announced Thursday that Pedro Hernandez had told them he lured Etan into a bodega where he worked, near the boy's house, and attacked the child, choking him to death in the basement.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said police focused on Hernandez, who now lives in Maple?Shade, N.J., after the Missing Persons Squad received a tip from someone who remembered Hernandez speaking of having killed a child. Others close to Hernandez also recalled those claims, a source told NBC 4 New York.

For more on this case, visit NBCNewYork.com

Based on those interviews, police went to question Hernandez.

Kelly said Hernandez, who worked at the bodega for about a month, had not given a reason for attacking Etan and said there was "no reason at this time" to suspect the boy was sexually abused. He said it was "unlikely" that Etan's remains would ever be found and that Hernandez told them he put the boy's body in the trash.

Kelly did not answer whether Hernandez had a lawyer.

Mayor Bloomberg said Thursday that the disappearance of Etan "broke the hearts of millions" across the nation, especially parents, and expressed sympathy again for the boy's family.

"I certainly hope that we are one step closer to bringing them some measure of relief," he said.

A suspect is in custody after making statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the disappearance and death of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old boy who vanished 33 years ago from his Manhattan neighborhood. WNBC-TV's Jonathan Dienst reports.

Neighbors near Hernandez' house in Maple Shade, N.J., said he lived with a woman and a daughter who attends college.

"I can't believe something like that," said Dan Wollick, 71, who rents the other apartment in home. "This guy, he doesn't seem that way."

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance had pledged to reopen the decades-old cold case when he took office in 2010. The exhaustive search for Etan was renewed several weeks ago when police dug up the basement of a handyman's workshop near where Etan disappeared. A new layer of concrete had been laid over the foundation of the basement shortly after the boy vanished.

That search yielded no new evidence.

A lawyer for the handyman, Othniel Miller, said his client is "relieved by these developments, as he was not involved in any way with Etan Patz's disappearance."

This undated image provided Friday, May 28, 2010 by Stanley K. Patz shows a flyer distributed by the New York Police Department of Patz's son Etan, who vanished in New York on May 25, 1979.

One other man had remained a longtime possible suspect: Jose Ramos, a drifter and onetime boyfriend of Etan's baby sitter. In the early 1980s, he was arrested on theft charges, and had photos of other young, blond boys in his backpack. But there was no hard evidence linking Ramos to the crime.

He is in prison in Pennsylvania on a separate case.

The boy's parents, Stan and Julie Patz, were reluctant to move or even change their phone number in case their son tried to reach out. They still live in the same apartment, down the street from the building that was examined in April. They have endured decades of false leads, and a lack of hard evidence.???? ?

Police said the family had been notified of the arrest.?

Stan Patz had his son declared legally dead in 2001 so he could sue Ramos, who has never been criminally charged with the boy's death and denies harming the boy. A civil judge in 2004 found Ramos to be responsible for the child's death.

Learn Something from the Student Loan Industry ? Article Directory ...

Imagine this: An official in a position of trust helps you choose a company for a service important to your future. You expect that the advice will be in your best interest.
What you do not know is that the person?s office has a financial relationship with that company. The official may have received gifts like trips or stock options, or money for professional advice.
Would you wonder, then, just whose interest was being served?
This is what some American states are investigating in connection with the student loan industry. They are examining possible conflicts of interest when schools direct students to lists of so-called preferred lenders.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who once worked as a lawyer in a rotary kiln company, says colleges and universities often fail to tell about their ties to banks and other finance companies. His office has already settled cases including with two big lenders.
And Education Finance Partners agreed to pay two and one-half million. Neither of them admitted any wrongdoing. The money will go to educate students about loans.
In some cases, when students call a school for loan advice, they talk to a lending company employee. But they are not always told that.
Andrew Cuomo wants financial aid offices and lenders to follow a set of rules, a College Loan Code of Conduct. These would end financial ties between lenders and schools, including gifts and trips.
At the same time, lawmakers are seeking changes in the student loan system. Mister Cuomo was at a hearing Wednesday in the House of Representatives. He criticized the Department of Education for not doing enough to control the student loan industry.
A day earlier, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings announced a committee to study federal student loan programs. And last week, her department temporarily restricted the use of a national system of financial records on millions of students. She said officials were concerned about an increase in usage of that government database by lenders and other companies.
In another development, Sallie Mae, officially the SLM Corporation, has agreed to a buyout offer. Two banks and two private equity companies are offering shareholders twenty-five billion dollars. The deal is unusual. Loan companies generally do not produce enough profit to finance a sale based largely on borrowed money.

UN says most Fukushima radiation doses below norms

GENEVA (AP) ? A year after Japan's nuclear accident at Fukushima, the World Health Organization says several areas near the plant had radiation above cancer-causing levels but most of the nation did not.

The U.N. health agency's first global estimate Wednesday of radiation exposure from the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, that triggered meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says increases in radiation were below cancer-causing levels in nearly all of Japan.

The agency's 124-page report also says neighboring countries had levels similar to normal background radiation and for the rest of the world there was some minor exposure through food.

The U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency has previously confirmed that radiation levels in some Japanese milk and vegetables reached significantly higher levels than Japan allows for consumption.

NBA playoffs: 76ers beat Celtics, force Game 7

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Boston Celtics, 82-75, Wednesday night at?Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Arena, setting the stage for?a seventh and series-deciding game in Boston on Saturday.

By Christopher Hartman,?Contributor / May 24, 2012

Philadelphia 76ers' Jrue Holiday, right, goes up for a shot as Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett defends during the second half of Game 6 of an NBA basketball Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series, Wednesday, May 23, 2012, in Philadelphia. Philadelphia won 82-75.

Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has referred to games like Wednesday night?s grinder against the Philadelphia 76ers as being ?played in mud.? It was certainly ugly all around, but the 76ers came away with the victory, 82-75, in Philadelphia, forcing a seventh game at Boston Garden on Saturday night. Allen Iverson, the former 76ers star guard who appeared to thunderous applause before the game, might have said that the best way to win a playoff series at Wells Fargo Arena is ?practice, practice, practice.? The Celtics should have taken some of that advice to heart, because for most of Game 6, they looked completely flummoxed.

It wasn?t all bad news for the Celtics, who got 24 points from Paul Pierce, including 13 for 13 from the free throw line. And Kevin Garnett almost single-handedly kept Boston close throughout the fourth quarter by contributing 20 more. But no one else on the Celtics reached the?ten-point plateau, with both Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen tossing in nine apiece.

One of the most telling statistics for Boston was how it got schooled in the paint. ?Philadelphia handily outscored them on the inside, 42-16. One reason for that, 76ers head coach Doug Collins suggested afterward, was that he wanted to keep his team in ?attack mode? and not try to get into a shooting contest with the Celtics. And the mediocrity of this statistic is compounded when considering Boston outrebounded Philadelphia, 48-37 (including 14 offensive boards), but just couldn?t convert on second-chance points.

Rajon Rondo couldn?t set up the offense, which accounts for his unusually low six assists. And Boston didn?t help its offensive cause by turning the ball over 17 times. ?

The 76ers, though they only hit one of nine shots from three-point range, nonetheless distributed the ball well, getting five players in double-figures. The Celtics put no pressure on them in that department either, hitting only 3 of 14 from beyond the arc. At one point, second-shift guard Keyon Dooling, ordinarily a serviceable three-point shot-maker, tossed up a rainbow which found nothing but air and fell harmlessly into the floor seats behind the basket ? it perfectly summed up the Celtics? offensive trials. Boston supplemented that with a series-low 33.3% from the field ? including Rondo?s hitting only 4 of 14 field goals. This field-goal drought also spread to the bench, with the Celtics relief squad managing only five points ? all scored by Mickael Pietrus ? in just over a collective hour on the floor.

If Boston wasn?t exactly piling up the points last night, they made up for it with their personal fouls ? getting whistled 25 times to Philadelphia?s 16. This hurt particularly in the last quarter, with Ray Allen fouling out in the crucial final minutes, and 76ers guard Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala hitting some key free-throws as the clock waned. In fact, Holiday (who led the 76ers with 20 points) and teammate Lou Williams were seemingly making shots from everywhere Wednesday night ? particularly inside ? and that, as much as anything else, was a big source of frustration for Boston?s big men. ?

The scene now shifts to Boston, where the pressure of getting to the next round will be sitting squarely on the Celtics? shoulders. One important factor when considering the grueling nature of the playoff game schedule is that Boston will have two days rest ? which favors a skilled, yet relatively elderly and hobbled Celtics team. For them, Game 7 will have to be a statement game, with Pierce needing to get involved early and often, and Rondo piling up the assists. But eighth-seeded Philadelphia, the relatively young and inexperienced squad they are, have been remarkably poised and shown that they are capable of winning close games on the road. Regardless, Saturday will undoubtedly be another tight and hard-fought game.

(AP) ? Robert Van Handel was a 15-year-old seminarian at St. Anthony's, a prestigious Franciscan boarding school, when, he said, a priest slipped into the infirmary where he was recovering from a fever and began to molest him. The priest told him it would help draw the fever out.

More than a decade later, Van Handel himself was molesting children while working as a Franciscan priest at the same Santa Barbara boarding school. Van Handel formed a boys' choir for local children and chose his victims from among its ranks for eight years.

The sexual abuse at St. Anthony's, including Van Handel's own account of his crimes, is included in more than 4,000 pages from the confidential files of nine Franciscan religious brothers who were accused of abuse. The internal files, coupled with an additional 4,000 pages of sworn testimony obtained by The Associated Press, are the largest release of a religious order's files to date and paint one of the fullest pictures yet of a pervasive culture of abuse that affected generations of students at the seminary dedicated to training future Franciscans.

The religious order settled for $28 million in 2006 with plaintiffs who alleged abuse by the nine Franciscans, but Van Handel and other defendants fought the release of their private files for six years in a legal battle that reached the California Supreme Court.

The files were obtained by The Associated Press from a plaintiff's attorney ahead of them being made public Wednesday.

The documents show how abuse in a religious order can be closely tied to the formation of children who grow up to become brothers and priests, said Terence McKiernan, founder and co-director of Bishop Accountability.org, which collects documents on clergy sex abuse and posted the Franciscan files online Wednesday.

"One offender bringing kids in can set them up to be abused by another offender and those kids in turn grow up to become a member of the order and themselves begin abusing children," he said. "The generational phenomenon of abuse is really, really clear in these documents and it's a heartbreaking story."

Brian Bosnahan, an attorney representing the Franciscans, said the files do not show that the Franciscans knew of the abuse at the school or by other Franciscans included in the settlement. The religious order was quicker than most to address concerns about sexual abuse and launched an investigation into the abuse at St. Anthony's in 1992, years before other Roman Catholic institutions took up the issue, Bosnahan said.

There have been no substantiated reports of abuse by Franciscans since, he said.

"In general, if you look at it, you'll find the Franciscans were among the most progressive," Bosnahan said.

The Franciscans played a pivotal role in bringing Christianity to California. Its members ? known for wearing brown, hooded cloaks ? emphasize the poverty and humility of their founder, St. Francis of Assisi.

The soft-spoken, bespectacled priest Van Handel, who is now 65 and living as a registered sex offender in Santa Cruz County, admitted his crimes and is the only priest of the nine Franciscans to be criminally convicted. He detailed his actions in a "sexual autobiography" and in court papers that are included in his confidential files.

He said his biggest concern was "the actual and potential damage I've caused to young men, the Friars and the Catholic Church," he told a probation officer in 1994, according to his file.

Messages left for Van Handel at his home address in Boulder Creek, Calif., and at his employer's office Tuesday weren't immediately returned.

Van Handel, who graduated from St. Anthony's in 1965 and later taught there for a decade, has been accused of molesting 19 people, many of them young boys he met while directing the community choir he founded while at the school. The choir drew young children from outside the seminary and toured Europe.

Van Handel would choose his victims from the choir ? often preferring vulnerable and lost-looking children ? and would photograph them nude, sometimes covered in oil, dressed in pauper's clothing or tied up with rope in the seminary's tower. He also would play tickling and touching games, according to his files.

He abused at least one victim at the seminary, where the child would spend the night with Van Handel because his mother worked odd hours as a chef.

One of his alleged victims, Bob Eckert, said he never thought at the time what Van Handel was doing was wrong. The priest helped the 10-year-old Eckert shower with other boys while the choir was touring Europe and then photographed him, Eckert said.

"I completely looked up to him. He was the one who determined who was going to be in and who was going to be out," said Eckert, who is now a 42-year-old general contractor living in Santa Barbara. "My mom had total faith in him, and I had no question that anything was wrong with being there."

Another priest, the Rev. Mario Cimmarrusti, has also been accused of abusing multiple students while he held the dual roles of head disciplinarian and head of the infirmary at St. Anthony's in the late 1960s. Cimmarrusti, who also attended the school as a teenager, took over as prefect of discipline the year Van Handel graduated.

His confidential files show that in an evaluation by a sex offender therapist, the priest estimated he had molested between 30 and 40 boys. On another occasion, Cimmarrusti said he may have molested as many as 250 boys, according to the evaluation included in his personnel file.

He is not the priest who Van Handel said molested him in the infirmary.

Cimmarrusti, who is now 82, could not be reached for comment. His attorney, Robert "Skip" Howie, said Cimmarrusti vehemently denies all the allegations against him.

"As an attorney, I can tell you that records can be deceptive and misleading," he said. "I'm really not here to argue the case, but all I can say is that he denies it."

The priest has been accused by 24 former students who alleged in lawsuits that Cimmarrusti performed hernia checks on the incoming freshman class as an excuse to fondle them; delivered violent, sexually charged beatings for minor disciplinary infractions; and molested students who were sick in the infirmary.

One student, Paul Palecek, quit the seminary because of the abuse, he said, and gave up on his dream of becoming a Franciscan priest. He remains active in the church and with missionary work overseas. Now 62, the semi-retired former contractor is studying to become a nurse.

Palecek testified that he told the school's rector about the abuse but nothing was done. In a deposition, the Rev. Xavier Harris said he didn't recall the conversation and there is no record of it in the priest's internal files. Bosnahan, the Franciscans' attorney, said he had no further information.

"I was really mad at God for a long time, but it wasn't God's fault. Mario chose to do evil," Palecek said. "Someone should have caught it. Someone should have caught it and done something about it."

The AP does not normally identify victims of sexual abuse. Palecek and Eckert gave permission to use their names in interviews with the AP.

Cimmarrusti went on to spend six years at St. Anthony's after Palecek's departure and then served as a missionary at a medical dispensary in Guayamas, Mexico, and in parishes in the Northern California towns of Stockton, Delano and San Miguel before being removed from the ministry in 1993 as his past closed in.

St. Anthony's closed in 1987, just a few years before the first of the former students began to come forward with their allegations. Now, with the disclosure of the documents, some of the former seminarians feel they can finally move on with their lives.

"This is like a wound and it's festering. In order to get this pus and this infection out, you have to open up the wound and let the air get to it and let it heal," Palecek said. "I can apply that to my life and to the Catholic Church. You have to open up these documents and let the air get to them so we can heal."

Microsoft takes Bing Streetside offline in Germany, privacy complaints to blame

Germany is notoriously privacy-minded, and services like Facebook's Friend Finder and Google's Street View have come under scrutiny in the country's courts. The latest offender to raise Germany's ire is Bing Streetside, a Street View-style photo service. Microsoft took the feature offline in the country following complaints about how Streetside displays private homes. By default, houses are visible, though Microsoft conceals the images if users submit a complaint. Still, citizens were apparently unhappy with this process, which prompted the company's decision to axe the service while it addresses those privacy concerns. There's always Street View if you need your fix of blurred-out Berlin buildings in the meantime.
