The American Language Institute in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies provides English as a Second Language instruction for approximately 1,500 students each year from more than 30 countries including the U.S. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to manage an already strong program as it develops both onsite and online--into a unit of even greater support to NYU and SCPS's international student objectives, as well as help develop and implement new ESL programs. The position offers room for entrepreneurial program development and expansion of international programs with business, government and industry entities in NY and abroad.

The American Language Institute is seeking an individual to oversee all aspects of administrative management of the Institute, and the provision of faculty and student services, student placement and assessment. More specifically, the associate director will help:


  • Develop new programs, courses, and strategies (formats, distance learning, and web-based courses), update curriculum, determine courses to be offered each semester.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention of faculty and students.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to meet enrollment and revenue targets.
  • Interface with NYU and SCPS units regarding student placement, conditional admissions for international students and student support services.
  • Supervise professional and instructional staff.

Qualifications:

?

Masters degree in TESOL, Linguistics or a related field required. 4 years? progressive experience in higher education administration or equivalent combination required. Experience in an Intensive English Program preferred. Must include professional experience in program development, increasingly responsible experience in program administration, working closely with instructional staff, supervising staff, and experience marketing programs.

The successful candidate will be able to plan, develop and implement innovative academic programs and develop retention strategies. Other knowledge and skills include:


  • Ability to successfully manage administration of an academic or non-profit department.
  • Ability to deal positively with the ever-changing international market.
  • Sensitivity to diverse customs and cultures.
  • Ability to work with senior-level administrators to maintain quality and effect change.
  • Proficiency in managing fiscal resources.
  • Ability to employ an entrepreneurial approach to providing innovative educational programs. Ability to evaluate programs and instructional staff.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with ability to work with a diverse population of managers, ESL instructors, university staff and international students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to market programs.
  • Familiarity with educational technology including online learning.
  • Proficiency with standard word processing, spreadsheet and other administrative software.
